What intersection would you say this is? Looking which direction? I can't get my bearings.

It's the block between where the current Mickey Dee's and Firestone AutoCare are located, believe it or not.  The position of that fire-alarm pole at the curb shown beneath that Fiat sign actually was at a drive-through service area which dumped you out at McGavock Street (parallel to and south of Broadway).  That service drive would have been in the middle of the current MD parcel; 12th Ave. would be behind the vantage point of the camera.  On the attached aerial, note the roof-top billboard sign (circled in yellow-green) angled toward Broadway.

This is the very same sign shown in the 1961 archive photo in the upper-left.  Also take note of the relative positions of other landmarks: Nashville Tennessean and Banner building (yellow).  While you’re at it, notice that the RR gulch had been filled almost totally with railroad tracks and facilities – almost every square inch from Church Street (aerial upper-left) of  to Demonbreun (beyond right).

It may be difficult to comprehend but the upward grade topo indication by sidewalk against the building fronts has been re-graded since then, but you have to recognize that very few structures  in that stretch, except some of those along the north (right) side of Broadway, remain with such a close frontage (right up to the sidewalk).  The telephoto effect distorts the perspective of distance, such that Beaman Pontiac and Jim Reed Chevy appear almost in the "next block" (within 500 feet), when in actuality they are closer to the old 15th Ave.   Bear in mind that there was no 13th or 14th Ave at that location, as with the angularity and mis-alignment of the north-south side streets, those two were skipped, even though the city created a parallel “Interstate” drive named 14th in “postmortem” years.
