I know I post a lot of shots from the WKRN Adventure Science Center cam...but I only try to post when I see something a little different.

This shot is the most "close-up" shot I've seen them do, which gives us a little better look.  This is the best shot of the JWM I've seen from this angle.  You can really make out the top of Bridgestone in this capture.  Also...a good view of the construction in front of the Omni (is that the Tri-Brand hotel?).

That is the Olmstead (6-7 story, 328 unit apartment building) going in along 5th Ave. South at intersection with Peabody. The Marriott Tr-Brand will start rising above the Olmstead from this angle in the next several weeks (it is at 4 stories right now).

In addition to the aforementioned buildings, except for McKendree Church, barely seen in the lower foreground, virtually every building in that photo between the Church & Commerce blocks all the way to 8th have been demolished (with only the Berger Bldg fronting 8th, and that white garage tower still standing). About 6 bldgs. on the west side of 8th above and below Commerce were demolished in the '80s to "open up" the area south of the Baptist Sunday School Bldg.

Thanks.  I don't have a lot to contribute, other than what I find online.  I'm a huge fan-girl of skyscrapers and huge fan of Nashville...but know very little about the built environment. But...ever since I read a little children's book about building a city in the 3rd grade, I've had a love for maps, buildings, skyscrapers and how things fit together in a city-scape.  Just a fan.

I'd say most of us are probably in the same boat as fans of Nashville and fans of cool architecture.  I think you're massively underestimating your contribution here!

Thanks so much.  I read all of the comments from members on this board and often feel pretty inadequate when it comes to adding a proper comment myself (though that rarely stops me from trying)

Have you ever come to one of our Meet-Ups?  Lots of fun meeting other folks who have similar passions for city planning, development, architecture, etc.  I have no formal training...just love learning and conversing.  You would be most welcome, titanhog.  There are usually about 15-20 of us that meet the first Saturday of every month at The Perch downtown on the NE corner of James Robertson parkway and 3rd Ave. North Free parking, and good coffee/food.  Nest meeting is Sat. April 1st at 10 AM.  : )

You and I would get along great, then. 

I had a similar interest in these things from a young age. I remember a particular book...Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel (had to look up the title)...that got me interested in building...things. I always loved reading maps. From a fairly young age, I could grasp maps and directions better than anyone in my family. Hand me a map and I'll orient myself in a second.

I did a research project in 8th grade on architectural preservation. 

I used to draw skyscrapers/skylines as well as create my own city maps...for fun. Many of my school notebooks were filled with them.

SimCity (and 2000, and 3000, and 4) were among my favorite games...as well as SimTower, Railroad Tycoon, and Transport Tycoon.

 

We're all fans. That's why we're here. And there are times when I feel like I don't contribute much (stuck in Smyrna most of the time). I appreciate the insights from everyone...and what they share (love everyone's photo contributions). Don't think you don't have a lot to contribute. 4,400+ likes suggest that people appreciate what you're doing.

And like Mark said, you're welcome to come to the meets. It's not reserved for "experts"...otherwise I wouldn't be allowed to attend!

It seems like a love of sim city and a love of all things MAP is a common thread with folks like us.  What you just typed there...like every single word...might as well have been typed by me, except for the Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel part...maybe I should give that a read! haha... but I too was obsessed with Sim City...still have the soundtrack running through my head from time to time.  And I couldn't help but smile when I read what you said about skylines and maps.  I was constantly imagining my own skylines and either drawing them or making them out of Legos.  I also have notebooks filled with maps that I drew!  Some of them got really detailed and colorized.  I loved to imagine my own countries, coloring in the urbanized areas and national parks and drawing expressways...then i'd even do little Close up inset maps of the "major cities" just like I saw in Rand McNally atlases (which I would spend hours at a time examining.)  We are truly a unique lot!

Yep. I drew my own countries, too. Sometimes complete with different terrain. Usually one dominant city, with several other supporting ones. Roads/highways between them. Important ports and rivers...airports...etc.

Now for Legos, I saved that for space travel. You should've seen the starships I created...

fyi, sim city 4 runs on windows 10 just fine.  if you still have the cd case, you can use the software key to download it form the origin (ea) store onto any computer.  if not, buy it again,  it is still great!

I highly recommend Cities XL also. You can download actual buildings and put them in your city. I will see if I can find photos of some of my cities. It is cool having say One World Trade Center next to Shanghai World Financial Center.

All I can say is that the crane is supposedly at 500' and they're going to raise it to 600' any day now.  So...the finished height will be about 45 feet higher than where the crane is right now.
