To move forward with the project, Tishman Speyer must receive approval for Design Review Committee and bonus height from Metro Planning Department Downtown Code Design Review Committee. A Design Review Committee meeting is scheduled to take place on July 18th.

I can’t wait to see the final design. We can still dream about this one. At least it appears that we will  get the one podium two tower design.

As much as I love seeing multiple towers rise at once, when I look at proposals like this I can't help but fantasize about it being a 1,086 foot tall single tower instead of two separate towers.  I know a tower that tall is nothing less than an impossibility in this city, but a guy can still dream.

Absolutely. Which is why the fourth office tower in Nashville Yards needs to get built at its current specification.

Eh, we do have a 750ft being built currently. Couldn’t be any worse than what Devon tower in OKC looks like.

750 is a big break through. Gets close to the tallest in Boston (790).

Not fear at all!  This is an FAA issue.  Get rid of the offending runway at BNA and you can build to the moon if you want.  If a city like Boston can do without supertall buildings, IMO Nashville can too.  The needles around Central Park in New York are absurd IMO and think about Washington D.C. which has NO tall buildings at all.  D.C. seems to survive without them.  And look at Paris; how despised is their one office skyscraper and it is not even a supertall.  Apparently the one built in the 19th century is good enough for them.

EXACTLY.  I honestly don't understand the obsession some people have with supertalls.  I think Nashville's skyline is developing nicely and has some buildings with interesting designs going up.  I'd rather see more infill than a gangly supertall.  OKC's skyline is just goofy.

In the case of Paris, even with Europe's largest business district just outside the city in La Défense, where 180,000 people work, there's not a single supertall among the collection of skyscrapers.  Tourists don't flock to the city to gawk at the skyscrapers but because of Paris's amazing street scene, parks, museums, food, etc.  The Montparnasse tower (689 feet) in the city sticks out like a sore thumb.  It is mind boggling that anyone thought it was a good idea to plop such an eyesore in the middle of one of the world's most elegant cities.  But even if it were an architectural masterpiece, it would still look incredibly out of place in Paris.

I agree with much of what you're saying, I've been to Paris a couple of times and it's spectacular but it's very different than any American city because it has such a long history and is filled with beautiful and unique architecture everywhere you look.  However, the Eiffel Tower is about a thousand feet tall which would be considered a supertall and it's centrally located in Paris.  Nobody says that its height is out of place with the much shorter architecture around it, it blends in beautifully!  Of course it's a very unique structure and not a building but I don't think it's fair to say that a thousand foot structure will always look out of place if it's the only tall thing in the area.  I do agree that the Montparnasse tower doesn't fit in at all and I know that the locals hate it.  

For myself, I think that the OKC skyline looks great just because of that one tall building which I feel is very sleek and attractive and without it the skyline would look mediocre at best.  Nashville already has quite a few tall buildings and a supertall would blend right in as far as I'm concerned.  I realize that we won't be getting one due to the FAA so I'll have to be content with a 750 footer.  I'll be the first to admit that I have an "obsession" as you called it with supertalls but I'm not the only one!  Do you really think that you'd have all of these people on this forum if there wasn't a significant interest in tall skyscrapers?

Oh I'm sure I'm in the minority about the whole supertall obsession thing.  But this forum is Urban Planet, not Skyscraper Planet.  I'd much, much rather have a dense city with no supertalls than a sprawlville with a few supertalls.  I do realize it is unfair to compare a city like Nashville with a city like Paris which, even by European standards, is very dense.  (Paris is the most densely populated large city in Europe at 54k/sq mile.)  I'm half French so I am very partial to the layout and density of the cities of Western Europe which manage to be intensely livable without many skyscrapers, much less supertalls.

I was merely agreeing with Baronakim that skyscrapers aren't what make a city vibrant or even memorable.  They're nice for post cards and Chamber of Commerce brochure covers, but they're typically not what visitors remember.  I mean, when I yearn to return to Paris, it's not so I can take pictures in front of the Eiffel Tower, it's for the street activity, the museums, the food.  Likewise, when visitors to Nashville go home and gush about how much fun they had in our city, it has nothing to do with our skyline.

I am thrilled every time I see an announcement for yet another high rise in Nashville but not so much for what it does for our skyline as what it does for our city's density.  I'd rather have a 10 story building with lots of street activity than a 30 story building with none.  I hope that makes sense.  If Nashville were to get a supertall in addition to all this wonderful infill, that would make me happy, too.

Tend to agree. I grew up in a city with the tallest towers in the South, but a soulless core. Anyone who's been to Prague can see just how a city with dense, low-rise buildings is far more walkable (and IMHO more livable) than cities with wide highways cutting through supertall (and yes, very impressive) towering buildings.

Some interesting and thoughtful comments guys!  I remember when I moved from Missoula, Montana to Seattle in the mid seventies and got a job working downtown in a fairly tall building for Pacific NW Bell.  For some reason skyscrapers represented a sense of big city excitement and made quite an impression on me that continues to this day.  I've travelled quite a bit since those days and have seen big cities in different parts of the world but the ones that impressed me the most tended to have the tallest buildings like Hong Kong, Singapore, New York and Chicago.  There must be some psychological reason for it but I suspect quite a few of you feel the same way.  

Anyway, I sure hope that this project happens and gets moving quickly, having two tall buildings on that end of downtown will reshape the Nashville skyline!

Different people like different things and, IMO, that's a-ok.  Perhaps as a community, we can get better at stating what we like versus knocking or "not getting" why someone likes something different.

Yeah, if all eight towers are built it will create quite the impact to that area and will be visually impressive to the overall skyline.

Sorry I’m a little late to this, but I was out of the country for a bit and I’m just catching up. As to these renderings, I would love to see some developer buy the rights to build this awesome project someplace in Nashville, be it in the CBD or the East Bank ! It would be a great addition to our skyline.

I keep looking at Google maps and envisioning these towers and the other Southbank developments.  The area has become a transformative engine in my head to replace the one the Circle projects had become.
