Drinking Beer in Charlotte

Big update (well...a long article) on the Free Range build out. They are scheduled to brew their first batch onsite this week. For those that haven't had Free Range's beers, you are in for a treat (if they can produce on the same level they were at home). Excellent and innovative brews.

Can one of you graphically gifted types whip up a neat-o jpg endorsing the repeal of 18B-1004( c ) (no Sunday morning alcohol sales) so I can spam a bunch of legislators on Twitter and Facebook?  I would do it, but it would end up looking like a geocities page with lots of blink tags and pink comic sans.

Something like:

REPEAL N.C. 18B-1004( c )

(make Sunday morning beer/wine sales legal!)

Sunday beer/wine sales are:

Good for our bars -- think PANTHER games!

Good for our restaurants -- think BRUNCH!

Good for our people -- think CONVENIENCE!

*=*=* REPEAL N.C. 18B-1004( c ) *=*=*

Edit: I had to space out the ( c ) because otherwise this board turns it into a ©

Maybe I'm wrong, but even if these bills die, nothing changes.  And only 1, maybe 2(?) breweries in the state are impacted this year.  I think NoDa and OMB are at least a year away, which means we have next session to get the limits raised.  I mean it obviously sucks for the 1 or 2 at the limit, of course.

Nothing really changes for Charlotte, but it affects the rest of the state (at least for now). Want Hop Drop in restaurants in Greensboro and Asheville? Won't happen. Noda has said they won't produce more than 25,000 barrels because they don't want to sign over to a distributor. They will supply the demand for the local market but will cap production at 24,999 and new accounts won't be added (heck they aren't adding accounts outside of CLT as it is). Olde Meck hasn't said they won't go over it but I believe they have plans to go way over 25k barrels.

Okay, I called the two Chairmen of the Committee, Boles at 919-733-5903 and Hardister at 919-733-5191.  Left message with both in support of H278 and H625 and said jobs were at stake and these bills are vital to Charlotte small businesses.  Hardister's assistant said he'd call me back, so I left my number.

Please call them.

Updates on "coming soon" breweries:

Salud nano - Their food business is now open.  No word on the in-house nano-brewing.

Free Range - Nothing new since this article from a week or two ago: http://clclt.com/charlotte/how-to-build-a-brewery/Content?oid=3603784

Wooden Robot - Construction well underway, including some brewhouse equipment installed.  Looks to me like they're way ahead of Three Spirits (see below).

Three Spirits - According to Apr 23 facebook, construction is underway....planning a "summer" opening.  Also have posted pics of growlers and tap handles.

Legion - Nothing new since the Mar 12 article in the Observer: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/entertainment/restaurants/article13794413.html

NoDa new location - Nothing new since preview earlier this month -- targeting August: http://www.charlottemagazine.com/Blogs/On-Tap/April-2015/NoDa-Brewing-eyes-August-opening-for-new-facility/

No location yet:

Avenge - nothing new, but actively posting beer stuff on facebook

DukBone - tap handles posted March 10, crickets

Thirsty Nomad - active at festivals (NC Brewers and Music Festival, South End Hops Festival), no news on fundraising effort

Blue Blaze - much more active on social media, but no news

Hob Knob - As of Feb 3, brewery is "on hold indefinitely": http://hobknobbrewery.blogspot.com/ .  I think I can remove them from the list.

It's almost May, but I think those first 6 have a reasonable shot at being open this calendar year.

Anyone heard where the second Bulldog location will be?

Last few times I have been in I was kinda disapointed by their tap choices -- they might be the same as before but Craft is making them look bad.

I asked the owner the week that article came out and he wouldn't tell me, haha.

The tap choices are 2/3 repeats but the rest are usually interesting...I don't think of them as competing with Craft though, I think they are on almost opposite ends of the bottle shop spectrum. If anything they compete more with Brawley's, who has them on selection too, but people go to Bulldogs for the relaxed atmosphere, cool people, and because they probably live in the neighborhood.

This article/video says 20 new breweries in the works --- 11 in the Charlotte area. http://www.wcnc.com/story/money/business/2015/04/29/cheers-to-more-breweries-around-charlotte/26599523/

I've got 9 on my CharMeck list.  Have to do some more digging to see if I'm missing any.  They might be counting Waxhaw and Gastonia/Belmont and Concord etc as Charlotte area.

NewGrass Brewing Company is coming to Uptown Shelby, opening July 1st 2015. Its manager is the youngest female brewery owner in NC.

While they were milling some wood from the original structure they found a musket ball from the 1850's embedded in the wood. It appears that the musket ball was in the wood when it was originally cut and milled.
