Metropolitan, Midtown Redevelopment

I wonder what are the requirements to become a level I trauma center. CMC Main is already a designated level I trauma center, But with all the expansion at Novant I question wether or not it will eventually become a trauma center. Raleigh/Durham has three level I trauma centers, meanwhile we have one.

How many does the Triad have?

I'm not sure if the metro area is better served by having two Level 1 trauma centers so close together. It would be preferable if a location like CMC Northeast or Novant Huntersville also became a Level 1 or Level 2 to serve a new geographic area of the metro with a trauma center.

The cost of the equipment, education programs, investments, and 24/7 staffing is very expensive for trauma centers, which is why so many trauma centers closed across the country in the 1990's and mid 2000's. The business case broke down in many instances because not enough patients use the facility to cover what insurance would agree to pay. For example, a Level 1 trauma center needs a neurosurgeon, plastic surgeon, radiologist, oral surgeon, and many more specialists on call 24/7 at the facility. At CMC Main, they are under contract with Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates, paying a CNSA neurosurgeon to be there 24/7 in the event somebody comes in with a brain injury and needs surgery right away. When you add up all these specialists that get paid BIG bucks, it gets expensive if your neurosurgeon is only used 30 times per year to do a stat-trauma that needs to go into surgery right away, rather than be stabilized and have the operation later.

I think Novant would prefer to get their own geographic niche rather than have their facility sit relatively empty while ambulances head to CMC Main down the road. If they had their own geographic niche, they would at least buy a portion of the market.

I think they are already a Level II Trauma center.  They are at least a level III, and were a practicing Level II for 2018, though I'm not sure if they will get the Full Level II status this year.  (I'm not sure only because I don't work there and have no knowledge of their operations)

The Midtown / CPCC area is getting a brewery! It's going in the American Billiards Company building next to the Domino's. I'm not even a beer drinker but I'm excited about this.  My only question is, where will folks park?

Uber/Lyft/Streetcar. They figure their product will be so good, people will find a way.

It's a bar so hopefully this will get people to not drive there and worry about parking/driving home drunk.  With Uber now it is so easy to get places when drinking, why would you drive to the bar even if there is plenty of parking?

The Charlotte Agenda article on the Crunkleton talked about how bad the parking is there, but maybe that's a good thing.  When I went I saw non-stop ubers dropping people off.

As a side note, this is also walking distance from a lot of the midtown apartments so that could help fill seats without worrying about parking.
