Re the Hume Fogg gym, aside from the blank wall facing the rear parking lot, I'm fine with the overall design.    Yeah, it does look tacked on, but really there was no budget scenario that would accommodate an all-stone structure that resembled the 102 year old stone "castle" main building.   Gymnasiums typically are, by their nature, large windowless boxes and are not gracefully added onto any existing building. This could have easily ended up being one large ugly red brick box like so many other high school gyms, but I appreciate the efforts the Kline Swinney firm went to make the 8th Ave facade architecturally interesting, including incorporating the existing stone walls on both the exterior and interior.    Rookzie is correct about the new masonry detail on the tower, which was a nice touch.

Cost absolutely was an issue and the final design had to be scaled back to accommodate Metro's budgeted $7.2M.      I'm actually a parent who's had 2 kids go through HFA and one more on the way, so I'm thrilled about this.    A gym has been in the MNPS funding queue for about 19 years.    HFA in the modern era has never had a functional gymnasium, possibly the only public high school in the state with no gymnasium.

Unfortunately, I don't see anything like that being built in a long, long time. Maybe the new state museum if they get their head out of their rear and build in a suitable Greek Revival style to go along with our capitol building.

It's sad, really. Gone are the days of the idea of lasting architecture.
