It’s not just about building codes, South Florida has the stack against it, a game of roulette and the odds are not in its favor. I lived there during Andrew when the naysayers were having parties on the beach, they soon learned the fury of nature. Roads ripped right out of the ground, steel twisted into pretzels and hardly a building was built over 20 stories then . And the population was not no where like today, they can never evacuate that many people now. Like mentioned above, there’s always going to be people who just don’t get it or want to , everything is a joke or a conspiracy theory. Until the worst happens, then they are the first complaining why wasn’t something done to prevent it.

^Exactly spot on.  The climate denial people are going to be the first to scream about why the gub'ment didn't do anything to stop it.   I'd love to hear this laughing emoji person actually articulate their argument... assuming they have one in the first place.

I think annual losses from hurricane damage in the US are about 10 times greater than losses from earthquake damage, and that gap is growing of course.

In taking a jab at California, it would have made a lot more sense to talk about wildfires, which can cost the US quite a bit more per year than hurricanes it seems.

The biggest problem for coastal land development in Florida isn't hurricanes, however, when sea level rise is conservatively estimated to bit off, chew up, and swallow between 50,000 and 1.5 million acres of Florida's coast in the next 25 years. 

On one hand, there's certainly a lot of value to be mined from developing coastal Florida in the meantime, and I almost don't begrudge developers for trying to get in and out in time if those companies were going to be responsible for covering the losses if/when they wait too long, but my guess is that most of the developers still building in Miami for example know that the government is going to bail them out at least once or twice before letting a fair portion of the city wash away, and my guess is that their guess will be right.

Downtown Tampa and St Petersburg are booming too.  St Pete has become a hot spot for young people after being a long retirement center for years.  Lots of condo and apartment towers going up there including their new tallest 400 Central.

St Pete photos first 5 photos  then Tampa photos after that.  

I went to all the major cities of Florida and the most high rise construction in order would be Miami, Ft Lauderdale, West Palm, Tampa, St Pete.      Orlando only has one high rise underway downtown and Jacksonville none I saw.

Yes, my dad and I work for a travel company and I’m a representative for them at conferences. The company is based in the UK and I’m living and working there now.

 

However I’m also visiting my cousin who lives in australia as well as some close friends here.

Earlier this month I posted some views of the Northern Cascades from the NE side of the island. Last Saturday I took a long walk through the snowy forests at the Ft. Ebey State Park and shot some views lookin west at the Olympic Peninsula and the Olympic Mountains.

Beautiful.   We hiked around Ft. Ebey in August (and spent a night at the nearby Captain Whidbey Inn).   The views from Ft. Ebey across the Sound are stunning, as your photos show.  

Btw, @chc3, if you haven't seen the documentary, Race to Alaska, I recommend it to you.   Documents the annual 750 mile sailing race from Port Townsend (just across the water from where you took these) to Ketchikan.  A fun watch and spectacular scenery.

Built on the site of the defunct Chicago Spire project, what would have been the tallest building in the western hemisphere. I remember following that project seemingly daily back in the mid-2000s until shady developers and the credit crisis killed it.

I guess if you have deep pockets and want to make a name for yourself, then pulling off something bizarre like this might help. There’s absolutely no reason for it, but then there’s no reason for Burj Khalifa or the Kingdom Tower in Saudi Arabia, just super rich people who seek attention. I like taller buildings and density, but there has to be a limit just in the safety realm alone.
