90% of Dresden was razed to the ground in a series of US-British bombing raids in February 1945, with 25,000 confirmed dead. After the war, the DDR had neither the funds nor the desire to rebuild the Altstadt (Old Town) of this beautiful baroque Saxon capital. Only after reunification, and particularly after 2000, did the meticulous restoration begin. Today, a tourist would never know that the center had been completely rebuilt.

Dresden is a remarkably under-appreciated city in Germany! So happy to see it make an appearance on your trip! Spent a long weekend here as well when studying. So easy to get via the Deutsche Bahn regional trains, we stayed in a hostel in New Town and walked over to Alstadt everyday. I went here at the behest of an old mentor who recommended many sights such as the elegant Loschwitz Bridge and adjacent to one the oldest suspension railway in the world, the Schwebebahn Dresden. The Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) in the third to last photo is a remarkable structure as well because when the city was bombed, it didn't collapse when the bombs his the dome. The bombings actually burned around the church and ultimately collapsed the structure. Reminded me alot of the Old Ironsides stories I heard as a kid about the USS Constitution.

The Grand Garden of Dresden is also a remarkably beautiful park with believe it or not a car factory at its NW corner. You'd never believe it though because it is a quite elegant structure. It's known as the Transparent Factory.
