Headwaters Resort & Casino (Proposed)

Portsmouth has reduced their real estate tax rate due solely to tax revenue from the casino. This is a real, true, and tangible benefit to Portsmouth residents and also makes them slightly more competitive region wide. $5 million of tax revenue also went to city schools. Oh, what could have been...

Best news I've heard on this in a while. Norfolk seems to be on the ball with this one. Will definitely take longer to get a casino going this route, but staying on the current course leaves the possibility of us getting nothing at all.

can't say i'm surprised. The question remains did they wait too long to bail on the tribe? I guess we have to cross a fingers we don't end up with a box casino and something similar to what they were originally offered....... History shows what will happen...

Only thing giving me pause is the comment at the end that the powers that be in Richmond would like to ensure that the Pamunkey are not cut out of any new development deal.  That is not free-market economics. So if a Bally's or a Hard Rock comes along and balks at sharing proceeds with the Pamunkey, that would be a deal-breaker?  Yikes. This caveat has Louise Lucas written all over it!  LOL!

She is pretty good at protecting her constituents is all I can say.

That proposed casino in Petersburg definitely does not kill any casino aspirations locally. It's first phase is a 200 room hotel, event center, and gaming area. It would be in an entirely different market. It may take Cordish and or Smith out of any local project, but not necessarily so.

I was referring to Cordish's aspirations. Listen, you do you but I am no apologist for the buffoons at City Hall.  This is an unmitigated embarrassment to Norfolk-- beyond our imagination-- and beyond anyone's ability to credibly deny the same. THIS is what could have been. HERE. THESE are the things that Norfolk and Pishko screwed up, royally. And you know how they messed it up. And I don't need to cite chapter and verse.

I agree that Norfolk screwed this up, but I don't believe this kills the possibility of a Casino here. The right developer can make it happen. Las Vegas can have 3 casinos on a city block and they do just fine. I fail to see how 3 casinos in 3 separate cities, with one of them being an hour and a half away from the other two, would be an issue. We've barely scratched the surface of the demand for gambling in Virginia.

All I was trying to say was that Cordish is probably out of the running now. I was not speaking to the viability of a casino here.  Simply put, I'm not sure Cordish would want to develop two major casinos within an hour plus of each other.

I really thought we would have a casino here by the time I was old enough to gamble. I still got 3 1/2 years but I dont see a casino in sight. Then again I think I should save up money before I ever gamble a dollar off...

If you're open to friendly advice.........don't bet your money at a casino...........anywhere........ever.

Yes!

You'll hear of friends and family bragging about nights at the casino where they came home with $200, $500, even $1000. What they speak a lot less about are the other half dozen nights they lost $200, $500, or even $1000. If you go, consider that money burned for "fun and games".

As for the market for casinos, I really don't think they're the massive attraction they were even a decade ago now that almost everyone lives within a couple hours of at least 1 or 2. I don't think anything like the original Pamunkey proposal is coming back to the table... but I didn't think that was realistic at that time either.

It is abundantly clear who's being undemocratic here. And it's not Petersburg City Council. The Unite Here folks are merely acting in their own self-interest...under the guise of defending democracy on behalf of the fair citizens of Petersburg.

They're not fooling anyone.
