  1. Kind of agree. I dont see how this renovation does much of anything to move the needle in any way. The current arena is good enough for things like the MEAC Tournament, an ECHL team, WWE events, a number of concerts, etc and would continue to be. This renovation doesnt look to be enough to upgrade any of that... maybe a few concerts? But is that really worth the price tag? This looks like an attempt to kick the can down the road 10-20 years by making an antiquated arena "look nice" and have a few more seats for sale (which maybe impacts an occasional Admirals game and some concerts). This is lipstick on a pig.
  2. You're not going to get any disagreement from me. But that's a much bigger problem... and one I think those approving the design hoped would eventually get fixed. Unfortunately, current city "leader"ship is chasing their tails focusing on glitz and glamour vs focusing on the basics. If the city would focus on the basics, the rest will take care of itself.
  3. Honestly, even the flashier concept in the renderings appears to have a lackluster/unfinished back of the building (common in projects like these but often the back of the building is better hidden). While the outside of the building isn't as sleek as what was initially proposed, I'm glad they decided to cut costs on the exterior vs the actual function of the building: That being the theater itself. On the inside, it really is a great facility and it's awesome not having to go to Durham or Charlotte for high quality shows.
  4. OK? Not sure why this was said again. I literally said it won't be a Publix at the current size. *IF* they expand the size of the store 15k sq ft, then maybe... but as I said, most likely not.
  5. Exactly. Wegmans had recently expanded into Richmond too (after previously going as far south as Loudon I believe). Virginia Beach and then Raleigh were natural expansion points before getting all the way to Charlotte. Honestly, considering their origins, I'm actually a little surprised they went to Charlotte before breaking into the Triad. Hopefully they don't "skip" the Triad in the longer run... and I don't think they will. As for Charlotte, they've announced their first location... but it won't be anywhere near the last. It wouldn't surprise me if they have 3-4 locations before the end of the decade in the Charlotte area.
  6. This project is more of a precursor project to the new Palladium South project that will go across the street from the current Palladium shopping center. The Palladium South project has appeared to be at a bit of a standstill lately but hopefully getting the road moving will help glide things along. My hunch is that the apartments will go up fairly quickly (2-3 years) but that the retail element may take several years beyond that to truly gain any ground. Heck, Palladium still has a fair number of empty spaces (such as the old cafeteria where an Asian restaurant has been "going in" for well over a year now, the old Ham's, and the spot on the other side of the theater from the burger joint). This new road though will give at least an alternate way in for those coming up or down Eastchester versus being required to turn onto Wendover, which would cause even more calamity than what is already there.
  7. It's too bad Harbor Park is built in a way that basically doesn't allow for an arena to be built there. 50 yards east or west and you could probably fit an arena on the other side. As for MacArthur becoming the casino, that makes too much sense. You could use much of whats there for a casino and still have plenty of room to repurpose otherwise (hotels, apartments, etc).
  8. I give you a "D" for effo"R"t. That's not a grade.
  9. Trying to gain a rough count, they appear to be 25 stories or so. Now, they also look incredibly generic so it could just be an illustrative example to show a general look. But if this gets built in any way resembling these pictures, thats HUGE.
  10. https://www.wavy.com/news/local-news/norfolk/norfolk-state-of-the-city-event-macarthur-centers-future-could-be-discussed/?fbclid=IwAR0YMf6Z_Vfwszs2UCYJfewgWjjrYTRQeceM5SYAvgBdnGHAedoQt2bmAjE Obviously details to come but these appear some grand plans. 400 room hotel and potentially three high-rises!
  11. Yeah. I agree. I did see Publix mentioned in an article though. More likely Aldi or some other smaller store. Even IGA or something like that maybe.
  12. For the right tenant, there may be wiggle room in the square footage. Yes, if it stands at 30k sq ft, it wont be Publix.
  13. Definitely a Japanese company and almost certain that the jobs announcement is in the Triangle... hence the stops there.
  14. There's no doubt Lidl pulling out will be a great thing, that was an absolutely atrocious use of space on that property. I'm skeptical about the Alexander plan being viable, but let's see it have its chance. It's a much better use of that space in that it brings residents to downtown AND it may also solve the grocery store problem. I actually wonder if this space is a better location for that urban-style Publix that has been "in the works" up by World of Beer for a long time.
  15. But without any real team to call the Coliseum home, what's the point of having such a large venue? After 2029, the ACC tournament is never coming back in anything resembling current form (IMO, the only reason it comes back is if the league is badly watered down... and even then Charlotte is more convenient considering the geographical spread of the conference now). To me, the city would be smart to looking into contraction in the next renovation (which would probably be needed come the early-30s). The concourses are barely sufficient for half the capacity of the arena as is. IMO, the best move is to reduce capacity to about 15-16K (still plenty large enough to host the NCAA Tournament). The city would also be wise to look into development opportunities near the arena as there's basically nothing there (which is also a detractor). Maybe one day, Greensboro can get AHL Hockey (or even ECHL hockey) back. But at its current size, how often does Greensboro Coliseum actually need that many seats vs say maybe 2/3-3/4 the current capacity? Maybe a couple concerts per year? ADD: Personally, I think the city should simply look into demolishing the Coliseum and building one closer to downtown with a 13-14K capacity or so... but for a number of reasons that will never happen
