NC Civil Rights

To be fair we won't know how big this economic impact is until we get numbers. I'd wager that it's not as bad (yet) as people think. There have been some high profile announcements of cancellations of expansions or new jobs but when you think about how large NC's overall economy, it might not be that serious. At least I hope not.

South Carolina's economy is doing excellently. Boeing, BMW, and the port in charleston are all expanding and volvo is building a new 500 million dollar factory. I'm not trying to simply be contrarian but to say we'll end up like SC is redundant when our economies are fairly similar except the massive banking presence in Charlotte and the fact that SC's upstate isn't nearly as big of a tech/research hub as the RTP.

Check out WRAL's fact checking that they did on what McCrory put out in his "Myths vs Facts" email on HB2. it's old but it rips apart what he was stating and how misleading or outright wrong the things in this Q&A document.

It's a little dated being published at the end of march but well worth the read.

I worry about this too.  During the last Legislature session (2015) the ultra conservative wing of the Republican party brought this up, but thankfully the moderate pro-business  "Chamber of Commerce" Republicans shot it down quickly.  But I think it will come up again in the next session (2017).  The religious conservatives in the rural areas don't give a damn if it affects business in the big cities.  Fortunately the Texas Legislature only meets for five months every two years, so new laws are not made that often.P

"The religious conservatives in the rural areas don't give a damn if it affects business in the big cities."

Exactly as in North Carolina. In fact, they'd love to see the big cities in North Carolina and Texas brought low.

The Republicans know this. They hate the cities, too.

Except that Tillis, McCrory, Berger, etc., are from cities...

Sorry if this has already been posted...Looks like tax breaks will be given to companies that only support HB2?

" Hager wants to remove state tax breaks that currently benefit American Airlines, NASCAR, Google, Apple and Facebook, all of which have taken public positions against House Bill 2. But he said that's just a coincidence"

We've lost a lot of faith in Pat, but even he can't be this stupid to support that... Not holding my breath though.

gezzus, this is really heinous:

"Lobbyists say they've been told – either directly by legislative leaders or by lawmakers' staff – that, if they or the businesses they represent speak out publicly against House Bill 2, they can expect retribution from House and Senate leaders.

Legislation they want won't move, and other bills could actually target them.

WRAL News spoke with 11 lobbyists who have experienced or are aware of such actions, but none would speak on the record for fear they would lose business or be targeted for retribution. One has already lost business."

Just when I think the right has contradicted their fundamental beliefs in every possible way they manage something like this. Fantastic.

-- Wasn't Citizens United based on the idea that corporations have the same free speech rights as people? (e.g. they have a constitutional right to not be censored by the government?). I guess at this point the NCGA gives zero F's about additional unconstitutional activities.

Doesn't mean they don't hate them. Their voters are generally not in the cities.

I think you'd be hard-pressed to find any North Carolina Republican politician who would have anything nice to say about Charlotte or Raleigh. In fact, considering all the merde they have dumped on North Carolina's cities since 2011, a case for their seething hatred is easily made. I find it hard to believe anyone thinks otherwise. Cities (and college towns) are the natural habitat of liberals who vote for Democrats. Of course they hate us. They heedlessly passed a law SIGNED BY THAT WORTHLESS angel loveED TOAD MCCRORY that ran off PayPal and Deutsche Bank. It has put all the sporting events coming up in Charlotte over the next several years at high risk of being cancelled. It has placed nearly 1/3 of the state's GDP at risk, just in Charlotte alone.

BTW, Berger is from the tiny town of Eden in Rockingham County, one of the fastest-shrinking counties in the state.

Tillis is from Cornelius, a Charlotte suburb that thinks Cintra is Charlotte's fault.

McCrory may find it difficult to return to Charlotte once he is no longer governor. I should hope he'd slither off to the meadow muffin in Eden, N.C. to whom he rightfully belongs.

The issue I find somewhat intriguing (if that is the proper description) is that large number of the politicians, especially from the Republican leadership in this state are not even native North Carolinians.  Either they were born in another state and moved here as a small child or even as an adult.  I did a quick lookup of some of the Republican leadership players in state government and discovered this bit of information:

Gov Pat McCrory was originally from Columbus OH and moved to NC when he was around 9

Senator Phil Berger was born in Rochester NY and grew up in Virginia

Lieut Gov Dan Forester was born in OH and raised in Virginia....his mother is former Congresswoman and Charlotte mayor, Sue Myrick who moved to NC as a adult.  She was born and raised in Tifton OH

State Sen Joe Apodoca was born in San Antonio TX...not sure when he moved to NC.....he was the idiot who called for Charlote to pay for the special session that passed the infamous HB-2 bill

State Senator Bob Rucho who was more at the fore front of wrestling the airport from city control is originally from Worchester MA.

US Senator Thom Tillis was born in Florida and raised in TN....moved to NC as an adult

The only high ranking politician from NC is State Speaker of the House, Tim Moore who was born in Cleveland County...(on a side note of Mr Moore, he was father was a former councilman on the City Council of Kings Mountain.  The elder Moore was voted off the council because he did not support the proposed Catawba Indian casino in Kings Mountain).

I just find it sad, that as a native North Carolinian myself and understanding the past progressiveness of this state's political history, is that individuals such as the one's above have made a complete mockery of this state and it's past leaders such as Jim Hunt, Terry Sanford and others like them who led North Carolina and place the state in a unique light away from the rest of the South.

I was skeptical that this could actually be happening until I read the article and saw that Hager essentially admitted that it is.  It's one thing to have a strongly held position, it's another to demand agreement or silence from everyone else.  This thing just keeps getting worse...repeal!

Politics is a lot dirtier than most people that are not directly involved in it think.

What gets printed is not even 20% of what the entire reality is.

Please, please do!

And take your partners with you.

RaleighHeelsFan, glad you're back!  You have said you fear for the safety of your daughter. Do you let her use the restroom in stores and restaurants and whatnot?

If yes, how do you keep track of the welcoming/"unsafe" ones (you know, because private businesses can have their own policies) vs. the discriminatory/"safe" ones. Is there a list or an app or something?

If no, then what's the concern? Why do you fear for her safety?  Why the need for HB2?

I go to the bathroom with her and stand outside the door.

Other than that...I think if you have a penis you should use the mans bathroom period! None of this "transitioning crap". Once you have it removed...then yes, you can go in a womans bathroom. No, I don't care about their feelings, why should I? They obviously don't care about anyone elses.

I am so sick how the government and large companies are forcing us to care about feelings of a tiny perecent of people, yet they don't care about the majority. At the same time, they are obviously discriminating against religous people who are the majority. (over transgenders)

Transgenders need to be on medication anyway...because it's a mental thing. Notice how large numbers kill themselves after they get the surgery. These studies have been done by doctors who also agree it's a mental thing.

1. I do not support HB2, never did.

2. I am not religious

3. I am not republican (certainly not liberal)

Just sick of the politically correct bullying crap. 2015 and 2016 will go down as the worst years ever. It's only getting worse!

Since when is standing up for human rights "politically correct"? Would you want to return to the Jim Crow South? Fight for the Confederacy to maintain the idea that humans are property? Steal land from Native Americans so white folks can build cattle empires? Take women's suffrage away? Allow only land-owning white men to vote?

Frankly, I'm getting sick of Republican politicians trying to scapegoat LGBT people for the ills of 21st Century American society.

I know it's somewhere in this thread, but several posters said this HB2 outrage would "all blow over" fairly quickly. When, exactly, do y'all think that will be?

So this transgender woman with a penis should use the men's room.  Period.  Is that your wish?

Araguz.jpg

And this transgender man with a vagina should use the women's room.  Period.  Right?

I love how you posts these photos as a arguement...I think that "woman" with a beard should shave it off so she will not "hurt the feelings" of the little girls who also have to use that bathroom.

Second, if that woman has a penis...she or he also does not care about the "feelings" of the other people in the bathroom. Kids or people against transgender. You know...they have feelings too. They also have opinions which liberals believe no one else can have.

This is what it's really about...hurting feelings. We don't want to hurt that gay persons feelings? Right?

Todays example of being a hypocrite:

Why is it ok to call people "red neck" but we can't call people "hagGS" both are used as a derogatory term to describle someone. Just another example of how liberals are hypocrites. Of course red necks don't have feelings.

RaleighHellsFan, I say this in all sincerity and with some pity mixed in:  The world has passed you by.

For your own sake/sanity/well-being, you should really get used to it.

Good luck.
