I suspect with the number of cranes here now, they are probably is short suppy.  I think the contractors may grab anything they can get.

So what are the odds A3 is built and built tall?  Isn’t this construction just for a parking garage and it’s possible that’s it?  Plus the idea they’re doing a “redesign” of A3 smacks of shorter and more economical.

I am not "in the know", but typically these types of cranes are used to rise within the core of the building as opposed to externally (or along-side) the building. I am curious as well why they have chosen this type. hopefully someone who knows more can shed some light.

It’s called a luffing crane. They are only used in big cities where space is tight. The angle allows luffing cranes to operate next to other skyscrapers efficiently.  Luffing cranes are only used in cities with dense skyscrapers like New York, Chicago, ATL.  If I remember correctly the Viridian was the first use of a luffing crane in Nashville because the Viridian is only 6 feet separation from the L&C Tower. Truly puts Nashville in the big city league.

They also converted the One Hotel crane to a Luffing Crane when the Embassy Hotel got too tall for the traditional crane to have clearance.

Thanks and welcome to the forum. I was just down there this morning and was going to make the distinction but you beat me to the punch and joined the forum in the mean time. I think as Nashville grows we will start seeing more of these. I think this is the 4th one that has been used. 

The first was for Viridian , the second was only up for a short time at One Hotel, and there is still one up at One City and it should be coming down soon.

I'm wondering if they're not quite done and are going to lay it down horizontally soon (looks like it could be set up to do that - the others seem to have similar joints that could fold it up like that). I've been watching it avidly from my Asurion office  

Does anyone have a bird's eye map of the whole project? I'm still a little new and putting together what all of the buildings are that are on this thread.

I would also check out the Development Map as it is overlaid on to Google Maps. You can zoom right down to the Nashville Yards site.

They completed the new crane yesterday. Found out it's called a luffing tower crane (the others are hammerhead cranes). The big arm can go up and down, though it's mostly been vertical. They likely used this because it's so close to the Amazon tower and other cranes. 

These are the kinds of fun facts you look up when you stare at the site every day
