We'll get field turf with parking lines painted on it and a tree in each corner. Parking lot during business hours, a park on weeknights and weekends.

Levine is probably going to put construction fencing around the lot with a few Tonka construction toys in the middle and say "Look, we're getting ready to start excavation".

I love that if this was any other project, we would all be like YAY PROGRESS....like when signs such as these go up for 300 S Tryon we will all jump for joy......but since its here we don't care and make jokes because we know how worthless these signs are. Absolutely hilarious and awesome.

Sooooo about that lot closing 09/01.....can anyone confirm if that actually happened?

I can confirm that there are still some cars parked in this lot, and that the entrances on 8th and Brevard are chained off, with "Lot Closed" signs blocking the entrance, but nothing at the 7th Street entrance. No other activity going on there today.

That would seriously be unreal if this actually started. I am absolutely NOT counting on it though. Romare Bearden seemed to take FOREVER to complete, I can only imagine this taking at LEAST 25 years longer.

So the entrances on 8th and Brevard are chained and state "Monthly Parking Closing for Construction 9/1/14" and the 7th St entrance is open and states "Daily Parking Closing for Construction 9/14/14". Not sure on the significance between Daily and Monthly, but I assume no construction is set to commence until at least 9/14/14, but the monthly parking customers needed to find new spaces as of 9/1/14.

^ Guess they were not interested in prorating for they monthly people.  Also, if they are cutting the parking revenue so precisely, I'd assume that they plan to start pretty soon afterward.

Not sure where you heard that, the plan has always been to re-use the Dixies building. There are some renderings somewhere showing they intend to utilize the second floor and install a sort of New Orleans-style wrought iron balcony, but I'm not sure if that's at all accurate anymore.

So is this really happening????? Obviously we will all be skeptical until dirt is moving (at a decent pace, not 1 dump truck a month), but it seems like there is progress for the first time ever. 

 

I have only lived here for 3.5 years, but has there ever been this much "progress" on the site before?

There is a traffic sign at the site of the park indicating that 8th Street will be closing starting on 9/8.

The closure of 8th street is light rail related. It will close for 6 months as crews begin grading and track construction for the BLE. This info is from the BLE Facebook page.

Got word that the official groundbreaking for First Ward Park will be next week on the 18th. Looks like this is finally moving forward!
