I agree. It would be nice if something like Hearst Tower in NYC could be done. Mix the old with the new.

^ ^ ^ Those buildings facing 2nd Ave. South are, for the most part, nondescript and non-historical structures that would be immensely out of place as the base portion of two 40 story towers, not to mention an 8 story pedestal and 10 story four-star hotel in between the two towers.

That Hearst Building in NYC is a whole different scenario.   The famous and beautiful older structure has the proper scale and architectural heft to make that type of modern tower above it work.

Looks like maybe this was taken during the Battle of Nashville...and that's Gen. John B. Hood?  From this image, does it show that it's located where the current railroad bridge is located?

 

Btw...look at those railroad cross timbers.  Those just look like logs they picked up floating down the river.

I think that's the communication tower next to Jefferson Street bridge.

That's a permanent reminder of how tall 505 would have been before it got chopped.

Nice photo. Have a question. Sorry for reposting the photo, but I'm referring to the crane visible about midway up the left side of the L&C tower. Is that the crane for the Cambria, or the crane for the hotel going in at Printer's Alley?  If it is the former, then the Embassy Suites tower should be amply visible from this angle/distance.

^ ^ ^ I believe that's either one of the cranes for the Dream Hotel or the Bobby Hotel, both on 4th Avenue North between Church and Union Streets.  I doubt that when they are finished the neither the Embassy Suites or JW Marriott will be visible from this particular vantage point.

I can't get over the updated pictures of downtown posted here the last couple of days! I have to stop every time to be sure it's really a picture of Nashville! Certainly ain't the downtown Nashville I grew up with in the late 90's and early 2000's! I was just on a roadtrip with friends from Chicago to the Smoky Mountains, and we passed through Louisville and Indianapolis, which I used to consider peer cities. This new Nashville skyline is making really putting it on another level ahead of those cities. Loving it!

I totally agree that the changes are truly mind-blowing, although I don't think I'd go so far as to say that Nashville is a league above Indy and Louisville, unless you're talking strictly about skyline.  Metro Nashville still falls pretty much right smack in between them in terms of population.

Agree Nashcago, it's remarkable how much Nashville's skyline has changed in the past three years. Being one who travels weekly (flew to seven cities in one day last Thursday) and having spent three nights in the J.W. Marriott in downtown Indy two weeks ago, and having traveled to Louisville over 100 times, I find no sizzle in either of those cities. The skyline is one thing, but come and spend a week in Nashville and feel the vibe. It's a nice place, the people are great, and it's fun. I found Indy to be well-planned, nice and clean but about as interesting as a brand new interstate overpass. Louisville, well Louisville and Memphis are in the same category, cities that have seen better days. While there are plenty of cities such as Chicago, Houston, New York and Dallas that overwhelm with their sheer size, Nashville is still that little big town that has a certain aura and energy about it that's attractive. Yes, Nashville has a healthy growth rate, over 30,000 new residents a year, but that pales in comparison to larger cities e.g. Atlanta whose annual growth rate of new residents in many years were in the six figures.

There is a synergy in place in Nashville right now. Not much happening in Louisville or Indy, but either one of those could be the next "IT" city over the next decade. There is a huge amount of affordable housing stock in both cities. Louisville could be the sleeping giant, but Indy is way ahead of them. One thing that hurts Louisville is the fact that they will probably not get a Pro Sports team being in between Nashville and Indy. Louisville's MSA population is a lot smaller than Nashville, but Nashville is gaining on Indy rather quickly and should pass them in the next 5 years.
