Mango's Western Caribbean Restaurant and Bar will be going into the loooooooooong vacant beige brick building adjacent to Tasty Yo and Crepe Cellar. They just got their building permit for the refurb on Friday.

This is a minor project for the neighborhood but will continue to push the street life further south along Davidson.

Is Tasty Yo still there? Google maps has it moving to uptown?

Quick update on Johnston and Mecklenburg Mills:
Mecklenburg Mill's rehab, underway now, is going to result in 48 units coming to market for move-ins this September. They'll be marketed as "The Lofts at NoDa Mills," though the building will retain some signage as Meck Mills. The undertaking to save these buildings is really impressive.

More exciting, though, are their plans for Johnston. They're getting good momentum to open up the wall facing Davidson with galss onto a new patio/plaza for storefront space, to the tune of about 25-35,000 sqft. There will also be 70 units (not sure if apt or condo).

That's much quicker than I expected. I haven't been by there in 2-3 weeks, but it looked like they were still in the middle of just doing initial demo work on the interior and the windows. Surprised they can have it move-in ready by September.

Very happy that that property will no longer be a blight on the neighborhood though.

I think everyone was surprised to hear a move-in date that soon. The windows are supposed to go in this month, and as soon as that happens the interior work can fly right along. With the style, it's not like they're going to go crazy with complicated interior finishes and the like. Good things!

I've heard that the parking deck erection is supposed to start in the next month or so on the Mercury site.  Things will really look different at that point.

Very very very excited to hear they are contemplating storefront along N. Davidson at the Johnston Mills.  That would be really big for the neighborhoods movement in that direction along N. Davidson.

New Multifamily Project was approved for the corner of Anderson and N. Davidson. It will be called "Galleries at Noda" and was designed by Urbana Architects (my least favorite). 42 units of residential 2,500 sq feet commercial/retail. Done some weird things to make it fit on the lot. Should be interesting… This is the latest iteration of a project first proposed in 2008.

Its not the best design in the world, and it definitely represents a HUGE step back from the original proposal. which utilized NYC style auto-lift parking systems.

"As you can see in this rendering, we have chosen the vernacular of a cardboard box, popular as play toys among young children, to relive the joys of childhood when we did not give a fk about anything in the world.   This is our new Don't Give A Fk style.

Here at Urbana, we are making the heydey of architecture, the 1970s, new again."

"After we exhaust the themes of the cardboard box, we hope to explore the wonders of the plastic bag, choking the breath of life out of every living thing.  The movement expressed by the curves of the plastic bag is a perfect juxtaposition on the lifeless corpses within.  The transparency revealing the death in a fantastic display, with the howling of the nearby train yard representing the wailing mother.

Here at Urbana, we seek to beautify the city by making it as ugly and stark as possible, which is true beauty."

:stop:  They're using vinyl siding, so I'm sure it will turn out fine.

Ha ha!  Top quality post right there.

Just remember there is an owner that deserves some of the criticism.  Architects are bound by the budget given to them.  Though I will agree Urbana seems to be a common denominator on some really ugly mutli-family deals built recently around town.

Apparently there will be a public meeting later this summer about a 25th street bridge across LSC, providing a pivotal connection from Davidson to Brevard St & connecting Villa Heights to the BLE 25th St Station. Not budgeted for construction for a couple of years yet, though.
