Rebuilding Second Avenue

I want to see it become a wall of shame for the city of Nashville. A mural with things like Bill Boner, Woo Girls, Vanderbilt Football, Opry Mills, Mass Transit (just leave that part blank), etc. Screw posing in front of a set of wings for social media, show people you've REALLY been to Nashville by standing between a mural of the Nathan Bedford Forrest monument from I-65 and the PSC Scrapyard!

This honestly may be worse than the original building. The old design was ugly, but it didn't attempt to stand out from its surroundings like this one will be doing. I'm very disappointed that this was the city's vision for this.

The problem is it has already been approved by historic as well, with little or no community input.

I don't know, I mean I don't love this design either, but what's the point of it trying to blend in with 150 year old historic brick commercial buildings?  It's not like the red brick fooled anyone.  You can put an elephant in a suit and tie and put it in a theater and people are still going to wonder why there's an elephant in the theater.

Mayor Cooper unveils further plans for  1st and 2nd Ave.  North's futures.

The first phase of reconstruction will be funded by a $20 million allocation approved Tuesday by the Metro Council as part of Cooper's $564 million capital spending plan. 

The plans focus on creating a "more livable streetscape" with widened sidewalks, increased space for outdoor dining and food kiosks, plant life and public art. 

AT&T will fully fund a permanent, life-size mural on its nine-story telecommunications building at 185 Second Ave. The mural, based on Nashville artist Phil Ponder's "Market Street Too," depicts the Victorian facades as they were before the blast and will stretch the length of the nearly block-long building. Architects Kem Hinton, Cyril Stewart, Gina Emmanuel and Ron Lustig created the concept.

172 Second Ave., was completely destroyed in the explosion and would be removed to create a 30-foot-wide terraced pedestrian pathway between Second and First avenues to be lined with storefronts and outdoor dining.

"Now we can make First Avenue a front porch for our river and better reconnect downtown to the Cumberland," Cooper said Wednesday. "And that's going to set the stage for phase two of our work activating an extraordinary riverfront."

With so much attention being paid to this block of 2nd Ave, has there been discussion of the surface parking lot consuming the entirety of the block immediately to the north?

I would love to see a well designed building on that site. It could create a continuous pedestrian-friendly experience between City Hall and the Public Square and the part of 2nd Ave that is being rebuilt.

For a long time that surface lot has seemed to me like a missing front tooth for downtown Nashville.

Mark…did they ever decide on a finished product for this?  I can’t remember if there was a design on it that went above the street eye level or if the upper portion will still be a blank wall.

It's going to be a light tan cladding, and then have a mural painted on the lower levels.   I don't care for it much.
