$11 an hour to rent a car?

Well, I did some rough math with some incomplete data:

Average cost of a car in 2012: $30,303 (http://www.forbes.co...e-of-a-new-car/)

Average length of time that a car is kept: 11 years (http://www.kplctv.co...-for-200k-miles)

Average time spent in a car per day: 1 hour (Center for Transportation Analysis 2001 study - does not differentiate between drivers and passengers and may have changed since then)

Average monthly insurance bill: $150/month (estimate)

Average $ on fuel: $368.09/month (http://money.cnn.com...nding/index.htm)

So costs include:

$30,303 + $19,800 + $48,587.88 = $98,690.88 over 11 years of car's life

Average time spent using the car:

1hr * 365days * 11years = 4015 hours over 11 years of car's life

How much people pay for their own car per hour: about $24.58/hour

The $24.58 hour is an estimate, yes, but it doesn't include repairs and if you are a bad driver your insurance on the car will be more. It seems quite reasonable to pay $11/hour for a rental car, especially since it has a free gas card.

Cool.

Excellent analysis! Thanks.

Ground was broken today for the new school a Millennium Campus: http://www2.wspa.com...ool-ar-4821754/

This is kind of surprising. I've heard some mixed comments from various sources, including criticism on the design. The proposed design at the old JL Mann site was more ICAR-like than this proposal.

In other news, work is on-going for the new signage along the interstate. What I've heard sounds neat, but difficult to completely visualize. So, we'll see what we get...

TIGGES, a German-based maker of fasteners, announced Tuesday it will establish its first North American facility at the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR).

The $1.5 million investment is expected to generate at least 5 new jobs. The company will announce details on hiring in early summer.

Founded in 1925 and privately owned, TIGGES is a leading international manufacturer of fasteners and connecting elements required by the automotive, industrial, marine, energy and aerospace industries.

The company’s new Greenville location at CU-ICAR will be a technical sales office to drive supply chain efficiency and improve customer service to North American customers, and complements the company’s current international locations in Germany, Malaysia, Japan, and Taiwan, company officials said in a news release.

Does anyone know where this building would go? Or have a long term buildout plan for ICAR?

Between the Center for Emerging Technologies building and Millennium Blvd: http://cuicar.createlaunchlead.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/One_Research_Drive.pdf and http://www.swasc.com/pdf/listings/5831162801081270.pdf

Thank you! Are there options to further expand this campus once this 6th phase is built? I would think they would want to expand on the other side of the railroad tracks so a future rail stop could be incorporated.

Here is the Master plan: http://cuicar.com/campus/master-plan/

This building would just about complete Neighborhood I.

From there, they would built II,III,IV, and IV.

Many of the sites will include retail shopping for students. All in all, looks like the current site is only roughly 1/4.5 the total area that is planned.

This will take awhile, but just about it will look like at the end!
