The vacant land.  If you look at the lot in Polaris and add the zoning layer, you can see that this end of the land does not have any zoning assigned. Might just be sorting out the zoning before closing on the sale of this land to Crosland.

Does anybody know what's going on with the plot of land of central in between the McDonalds and Midwood Country Club (the Resident Culture over flow lot)? It's been for sale forever but saw the old building roped off the other day with construction trucks around it. Wonder if it's been sold and they're getting ready to begin demo. Anybody have any information here?

Neighborhood Services mixed use project. Doesn't seem to have changed hands since this rezoning.

That restaurant was Little Italy. I ate there 40 years ago and it was mediocre (sorry, Greek family owners). Too much oregano, sweet, and drowning in cheese. It is what Charlotteans thought was Italian at that time. Tastes change. It has been vacant and deteriorating for many years. Many Greek restaurant owners owned their land. It was a business decision for them. Mr. K on South Blvd, The Castanas family with Epicurean on East Blvd is another. Mantas on South Boulevard from the early 2000's. Kokenes and Open Kitchen on West Morehead. They have a connection to the site that is personal. It works for them and when the restaurant is no longer viable or the next generation is unwilling to put in the hours necessary for the food business the connection stays strong. @Temeteron may offer his view.

I believe some of those construction vehicles are actually being used across Central on the back side of pin house. I thought I read somewhere that they were going to put a little walking path along the Veterans branch of Briar Creek. I took a picture on my run today.

If that lot is finally being developed, I'll be interested to see what Resident Culture does for parking...

There are a couple of articles that discuss the Greek owned restaurants of Charlotte.  It’s quite interesting and I’m proud of it actually:

a lot of them have been closed over the years due to the younger generations being more college educated and continuing on to other industries.  Also, it’s much harder these days owning a restaurant since cost of rent is sky high and there is way more competition now.  I must say some of my favorite Greek owned spots are Ilios Noche, Soul Gastrolounge, Mocco Bistro, Kiki’s Bistro, Mad Greek, Little Village Grill, Stack’s Diner, Landmark Diner and Big View Diner

Don't forget Gus' Sir Beef and Oakhurst Grill (formerly Mr. C's).... though Mantas was my favorite.

Is fried southern comfort food / Italian fare mash-up run by Greeks a uniquely Charlotte thing, or was this common across the South?

Little Village is a true gem for them more authentic Greek fare.

Greeks basically had to serve food the locals wanted or were used to.  Mostly southern food but also added some Italian and Greek items that were pleasing to their palettes  as well.  Spaghetti, lasagna, Greek salad, gyros, lemon chicken with potatoes etc.  We have come a long way since now in 2020 we have Greeks places that carry more exotic dishes like Imam Baldi and Pastitsio (Kiki’s Bistro),  Lamb Chops, Octopus, and Youvetsi (Ilios Noche) etc.

Greeks run most of the diners in northeast too and basically comfort food our twist in the south is a few more southern favorites. The only restaurant that never closes on Hilton Head is the Hilton Head diner and it does not even close during hurricanes.

The Greek heritage in Charlotte is Τεράστια   (Huge)  If you go to the Levine Musuem of the New South and look at the Charlotte through the years exhibit you will see one from 1940s that talks about the 3 "types" of people in Charlotte:  It says Whites, Blacks and Greeks.   My Greek friend in Atlanta loves that.    The Greek community was Charlotte's first ethnic community and Charlotte is a lot better for their immigration here.

Back to Little Italy: when the owners closed the restaurant in 2008 they sold the property to an organization named Jupiter, llc, which has three directors including Andy Kastanas. He of Soul, Diamond and others. The llc registration has his name spelled kastanes which I believe to be a misspelling.

Does anyone one know what is going on with the old laundromat on the corner of Central and Arnold?  Activity has picked up the last couple weeks.
