  1. https://public.flourish.studio/visualisation/17708874/ This is a precinct map with most common registered voter names. For those not familiar to the region check Union County where Helms is so very common. Also Robeson and Scotland County with Oxendine, Locklear, Lowery, Hunt and Chavis. These names are very common in the Lumbee family communities. In southwest Union county the precincts that abut (essentially) Providence High school all have thee same most common name: Patel. Mecklenburg is white-bread English names by comparison.
  2. There were the renters and renovators who were in the original Bohemian city life movement, the urban pioneers. The villains were the landlords who had scooped these old homes for pittance and kept them for the low upkeep rent available. Then there were the Bo-Bo's, the Bohemian Bourgeoisie, who adopted the style without the emotion or motivation of the pioneers. The villains were the pioneers who would not sell even though the reward was multiples of their early investment. Then came the political and economic adventurers who wanted the location cachet but not the property itself. Thus the 4000 sf inappropriate homes midst the mill village structures. The villains were the residential and commercial developers who wanted every square foot to be available for "higher" use. Also strangulation by auto.
  3. 429 East, the blue clapboard house on the right as seen from the street, was a rooming house in the 70's. It was later the offices for a local publishing company. Then sold to a salon owner for beauty services. The lot now under development was parking for the house and employees and clients. The access is a common (shared) alley/drive that is from Lyndhurst. Unless there is approval for curb cut from East, which I doubt, that Lyndhurst access will become more active. The same is true for the next few blocks on East where alleys provide access to the rear of the cross street properties which border East as well as the East facing properties. Permit site says an office building and this is in Historic District so almost certainly a wood frame building the size of the adjoining structure and with similar features for street facing appearance.
  4. How much commuting time is too much? What is your limit, beyond which you would change life pattern, change job, change living location? Have you a limit? Will you accept a job with higher pay and longer commute time? Lower pay and shorter/no commute time? What is your calculus? edit: for 98% of my working life I lived near the center of the city and my commute was outward and not inward. I was traveling against the rush and not within it. Occasionally I had to drive across town but still not with the traffic crowd.
  5. My experience: Buying tickets outside stadium on game day/evening is far less than face value. (Yr mileage, etc)
  6. https://www.ft.com/content/9c936d97-5088-4edd-a8bd-628f7c7bba31?accessToken=zwAGFnJtT4Y4kdOck22XUIhO3dOovWKPfHu6MQ.MEUCIBkfu5DL_JKcrv8OdlpB5PngLDlwuzURI8dyxjgeKu4rAiEAoY4QysRo2BqGMLG7tYej43V8PKmM5m5YIt2LXzlzl1A&sharetype=gift&token=bc9cc6e0-4532-44d4-a75d-2752c850cfc6 Pedestrian deaths are due to...mobile phones. Also visibility, time of day, and in general, incompetent driving. Yet the phone connection is a specific factor.
  7. There was a change order? Different glass plus add 32 floors. Easy-peasy.
  8. The "official" attendance yesterday was 10,400 which is tickets sold. Thus we know that the full/partial season ticket base is about 10,000 or a bit less considering there are some walkups/game day sales. Season ticket sales are not public information but this is certainly in the lowest MLB range. Athletics likely lower. Tampa Bay and Miami have had low season sales in the past, apparent when there was a game such as this in Chicago yesterday, a last minute rescheduled game from a day-before rainout.
  9. My wife would never walk down that street after dark even with me beside her. Daytime would be unlikely. The human abandonment safety factor for women must be considered. Theirs is a different experience.
  10. Cam Newton could offer an opinion. https://www.wbtv.com/story/27585580/carolina-panthers-quarterback-cam-newton-taken-to-hospital-after-car-crash/
  11. Heading to Eastland on Central there is a former service station at the corner of Rosehaven with a mobile car wash in operation and a canopy for a tropical(?) fruit sales table. The fruit included something the size and color of a small watermelon but a man was hacking at it with a machete. From this limited description can anyone guess what that fruit was? I know not. There were more cars in the wash/fruit location than the CVS across the street with a lot three times the size. Here, as well as everywhere I went in the city today, people were out in force; parks, sidewalks, families, everything. I call this the first true summer day in Charlotte.
  12. KJ: I think the answer is yes. This building is near completion. This is out of the ground and may be the one you mention above. Between the two above is this area with staging and storage. The bus connection is still here and is the only general motor access in the area. Everything else fenced and construction area limited. A full size bus entered as I was departing. The entry/exist drive is marked Los Amigos Avenue
  13. I wonder if Long's Monument company, on Graham at Atando and on that rail connector, uses rail for their materials? They occasionally provide monuments of substantial size. These for civic and other purposes in addition to memorial purposes.
  14. When one types a reply or post there is a banner of options across the top. Toward the right is a capital A with a gray underline. Click on that A and the font color palette appears. The board has decided blue is for irony/sarcasm. One must highlight the typing area to be changed prior to making this color change. After posting the font color defaults to black.
