UPDATE:New Greenville Restaurants

I've heard talk about favorite places to eat that are a step above but does anyone have an favorite "dives" that are hidden gems. Where the atmosphere is definitely not the top priority but the food is outstanding or you are just in the mood for to be "down home"?

Just curious because it's usually more comfortable to visit a chain or one that looks nice but sometimes they are places off the beaten path that are actually better quality wise but your average joe may not know about it.

The North Main Soda Shop, on N. Main of course. One of the best burger/hot dog places in town and it's been up and running for years and years. It's also nice being only a couple blocks from my house!

Other places I like that probably aren't mentioned here too often are Blockhouse (on Augusta) and Henry's BBQ (on Wade Hampton beside Sherwin Williams, they also have 2 other locations, somewhere...).

Some good cheap eats? Just Dogs at Cherrydale (cash only) is not a dive, but is inexpensive. Make sure you get honey mustard with your fries. They make it there. Taco Casa on Pleasantburg (cash only) americanized mexican. Kind of like a non greasy taco bell. You either love it or hate it.

Smileys in the west end is not cheap, but they serve great food until 2am! Love the black bean dip.

How could I forget Taco Casa! It's definitely the best restaurant in Greenville :P . Ok, not the best...but good and cheap. I used to eat there at least once a week.

Taco Casa is one of those places, like Gene's or Tommy Country's Ham House that seem to attract a fairly significant portion of Greenville's movers and shakers for some reason.

I've been in the Ham House at times and I think you could hold a Chamber of Commerce meeting in there. I think I've met just about every Republican Presidential candidate for the last 10 years or so there as well.

Lots of other community leaders frequent Taco Casa as well.

Besides, I just lover their $2.25 lunch special. That place has been open for a long time, good memories from there.

Not sure the best place to post this, but Greenville High School had an event at Falls Place tonight and said that a restaurant that is going to occupy the large vacant space on the street level floor held off until their event was over to start their renovation in the following days. Seems to me this was planned as the Boathouse Restaurant. Maybe it's a go. Or will it be something else? I think we'll be seeing soon.

There was a report in the Greenville News on April 7th about the Boathouse pulling out of Falls Place at Park as well. They're still open to considering a different location in Greenville once the economy picks back up.

Smileys is in the west end on Augusta Road. It is in the same shopping center as Life is Good and Monkees.

Little late on this one.. but I love Smileys! They have great food, and we always seem to have a good time when we go.

I talked to Mallie at O-Cha a few times recently. Apparently they were trying to get out of the business after moving out of their N. Main location but could not find a buyer to sell their unique equipment. Then the Riverplace space thing came about and there they are.

I asked if business has been better in their new location and she said definitely yes. Artisphere (of course) was a huge draw for customers. On Sunday that had a line out the door for 2 hours straight. She thinks they are surely there to stay, which is great news.

It will be interesting to see when the Lazy Goat opens their gelato place next door. Anyone know when that's scheduled to open? I know that O-Cha has a completely different product, but right now they are the only source of refreshment on that level. When the gelato place opens, there will be a choice. I think they will both do great, though.

The phase 2 Riverplace building on the other side of the waterfall will be interesting to see what goes into the Riverwalk level. Looks like there will be a similar restaurant situation to what Lazy Goat has as a mirror on the other side with outdoor seating next to the waterfall. Can't wait to see these develop.

It's great to hear that O-Cha is doing much better in their new location. I'm sure business will only increase as summer comes and life along the River increases from an already heavy flow of people. Thanks for the report!

Where is this Stellar Wine Bar you speak of?

Above Venti. In the old O-Cha location.

The folks that own Trio next door are the ones opening Stellar. Of course, they also recently opened Trio loft above the back end of their restaurant and Coffee St. Bakery (does Trio own this too?--I've never been inside yet). They must be doing pretty well. I love to go there--one of my favorite casual places to eat downtown.

Isn't this how Soby's started off? Open one restaurant, then another, open an adjacent rental apartment...

The only source on that level in West End maybe, but don't forget Luna Rosa Gelato beside Wild Wings! That place is awesome!

Not new (it's been there a while) but have to give a plug and a write-up to Pisco Sour at Bongos. True Peruvian food.

About Pisco Sour: It is in the same building that houses Bongo's night club. The restaurant is open from 5 to 9 in the evening and then at 9:00, Bongo's takes over as the nightclub opens and food service stops. The interior is not much (go there with an open mind) as the tables and chairs are placed on the area that becomes the dance floor at 9:00. You're eating dinner in the middle of a club (one that reminds my partner and I of early 80's gay clubs), with the bright overhead lights they turn on at club closing. Not exactly intimate lighting. You must let your mind get past the decor (I continued to have visions of people doing poppers, drag queens and light sticks throughout dinner). With that said, focus on the food and you will be rewarded. The food is EXCELLENT. True Peruvian cuisine. Jose, one of the owners from Peru, uses vegetables shipped in from Peru, so you get the large, wonderful Peruvian corn. The potato's are heaven. Several dishes are prepared "a la pobre" style. I had the Ceviche, and it's as good as any you would find in Lima. And finally, the fact that you can get Pisco Sours in Greenville.....yum.....the ones here were perfect, just the right amount of foam on top. After two, you're buzzed.

Food: Highly recommended

Service: Excellent

Interior: Go with an open mind
