sports in norfolk

Johnny "Jesus' Twin" Damon can (ironically) rot in the fiery pits of hell for all of eternity for all I care. I think you know what team I like....

But I think we may have moved in the right direction last year... we just need more unity outside the sports realm. If we could show the franchises that the entire region is willing to work together all of the time (and reiterate our desire for a ML team as we did before, and then some) then we have a great shot at it.

I think Mayor Fraim said it best...

I personally don't think they are going to leave Miami, but ya never know.

This is a threat to get them to build a new stadium. For some reason I feel that this is another drag through the mud. People will get tired of this and then they will not show the support like they did when the expos moved. Too many let downs and people think that its a impossible feat and just ignore it.

Don't you kids worry. Norfolk probably won't get dragged through any charade of a stadium negotiation. The Marlins really want to stay in South Florida. Management figures that with a domed baseball-only stadium, the fans will come. Now they may get that knight in shining armor to come save them from having to move to exciting cities like San Antonio or Charlotte.

Two New Stops on the Marlins House Hunting Tour

The City of Miami withdrew its support. However, the County still backs a stadium. Hialeah which is in Miami-Dade County is courting the Marlins.

Remaining in South Florida is the best option for the team. Portland's new mayor has a stated disinterest in baseball and would rather use public funds for schools. San Antone is more interested in football but really isn't large or rich enough to support 2 pro sports teams. Charlotte, as admitted by its sports commission, can't support 3 pro teams, has just built a new arena, and is having trouble fudning a renovation of its AAA stadium. Vegas remains attractive, but there's always the gambling factor. Imagine no betting on the playoffs or World Series. Would casino operators really go for that? Norfolk and Monterrey are rumored stops, but no visits have been set. Norfolk's chances are nearly dead because of the Expos. And Monterrey as appealing as it may be for Latin American expansion is still a major darkhorse. It really comes down to the Marlins trying to get the best stadium financing package from the Miami area.

That's a question I keep contemplating. Although ticket prices are higher, I believe it is easier to market a 20,000-seat arena for 41 games than a 40,000-seat stadium for 81. With no MLB team in DC, a team in Norfolk would've been sold as Virginia's team. As it stands, DC has all major sports and so controls the NoVa market. NC has all pro sports except baseball which, as both Charlotte or Raleigh grow, is an eventuality. The localism of basketball along with the NBA's fairly strict CBA makes the NBA the most feasible sport for a small market. There are 6 markets smaller than HR with an NBA team but only one MLB city is smaller than HR: Milwaukee. And if it wasn't for Selig's extortion, the Brew Crew would be gone. People are laughing at the idea of OKC getting to the front of the NBA-expansion pecking order, but they actually have more people than Salt Lake City. Both those metro areas have 500,000 fewer people than HR. MLB would never consider those cities as expansion sites. HR can be competitive in the NBA. But in baseball, just look at how KC and Milwaukee are doing.
