Today CBJ - "Charlotte developer Laurel Street to begin construction on Uptown mixed-income housing in early 2021" by Ashley Fahey  (Subscriber article)

Excerpt:  "Construction on new mixed-income housing in uptown Charlotte will begin early next year.   Laurel Street Residential (the developer), in partnership with nonprofit Little Rock Community Development Corp., says it will develop 105 apartments at the corner of East Seventh and North Alexander streets in Uptown.  The site, which was rezoned last year, is adjacent to the Little Rock Cultural Center and Little Rock A.M.E. Zion Church.   Little Rock A.M.E. and the city of Charlotte are donating land to the Little Rock CDC for the project.  The city owns the 0.8-acre site at the hard corner, which includes two historic shotgun-style houses, and Little Rock A.M.E. owns an adjacent 0.6-acre parcel.    A spokeswoman for Laurel Street Residential said the shotgun houses will be relocated before construction begins, although it's not certain where.  Plans are underway but not finalized, she said." ... "The five-story development will include 67 one-bedroom units, 24 two-bedroom apartments, and 14 three-bedroom apartments.   Fifty units will be income restricted, at area median income levels of 30%, 60% and 80%, and 55 will rent at market rate.  The development will include outdoor amenities like a game lawn, water feature, dining area, fire pit and grills.  Indoor amenities will include a fitness room, lounge, cafe and business center.  The first residents will move into the community in 2022."

^^ great looking and half affordable housing.  I just wonder where they will move the 2 shotgun homes and they were moved to this spot so I guess they can be moved again. Perhaps to a park somewhere or the Charlotte History Museum property.

It’s one thing to have no appreciation for Brutalist or Stalinist Architecture, but I draw the line when folks have no appreciation for Post-Apocalyptic Architecture.  (Blue font in the event all you Post-Apocalyptic fans didn’t catch the sarcasm.)

I only mention this hotel in El Paso TX which reminded me of Hall House.  any word as I hear rumblings that it could be saved but only rumors.

check out the exterior and while the humble Barringer Hotel aka Hall House is not as majestic it deserves a life again as a hotel like this one in El Paso and opening as a Marriott Autograph Collection hotel.

The CBJ has an article concerning the 2040 impact on downtown, and if you look at the picture of all the growth to come there, Levine's parking garage is still shown as not finished!!!!!

They are dismantling the two long houses on the lot next to Little Rock AME where new apartments will be built. At 7th and Alexander.

They are being moved to west Charlotte but being preserved.  There is not too many of these shotgun houses left in Charlotte.

There's a row of them on E 34th St in Noda, but those are the only ones I can think of. Any others?

When these were moved to Little Rock Church location I came by there on my bicycle and saw Valerie McCullough, a woman I worked with, and her husband working on finishing touches. His family a generation or two before had lived in one of the homes and he took it as a personal project to complete it to as close to original as he could. Lots of pride went into those buildings. Home size is not the determining factor for such a thing.

interesting things at First Ward Park a new solar array flower and a pollution monitoring station.   I sure wish UNCC had a twin building!  Today.  Not sure what the disks are in the astroturf.

Since I'm sticking around the CLT area beyond the holidays, trying to ride out the potentially harsher mid-Atlantic January, I was able to actually drive around the city the other day for an hour or so, seeing in person the spots I most often check out online. I failed the UP community, though--I apologize--and didn't take any pictures, save one. My excuse is that I was alone, and ironically, not in traffic, so I had few occasions when I was legitimately stopped to take any pictures.  I may strategize better and get some pictures later in the month, if there's a nice, clear (warm) day that I can repeat or even expand the route.  

The one picture I did manage to take was of the new (affordable housing?) development on four of the cleared blocks west of of the now-completed separation of North Tryon. I was genuinely impressed with both the facades and massing of the buildings. They've definitely managed to make it look like a nice urban neighborhood, preserving a lot of the (Willow?) oaks along the streets, and hiding the parking lots within the cores of each block. When you drive along every street, with the exception of Pine, you pretty much see substantial rows of three story townhouse-looking apartments that don't look cheap (thus far).

This view is NW, towards the extension of 25th to Catalina. 

(I also got to see in person the (non-contiguous, obvs) progress of the bridge construction connecting 25th between Brevard and Davidson, which is at least halfway done, I would guess, from the passing view I got from Brevard.)

From the St Louis Biz Journal  and only reason I mention it now Jacksonville FL and soon St Louis are knocking down abandoned parking garages.  Hmm do we have any like this in uptown maybe in First Ward?

Knowing the sweetheart deals and deadline extensions this city has given Levine, they'd take ownership of the garages, knock them down, sell the land back to Levine for $1, and give him two years to start construction on a new garage.

homeless need a temporary home allow camping on the bottom floors until relocated to shelters, apartments, etc.

There is enough beds in the shelters and hotels converted to shelters to house all the people remaining at the tent city. The problem is that the people don't want to go there. They feel safer outside in a tent than inside at a shelter or hotel room.

that I know some will never go into shelters as they don't want to abide by their rules etc.  However we can not have people camping on state owned right away.
