What I've caught glimpses of, in regards to the three cultural spaces being redone on N. Tryon, they have all been pretty iconic. Not sure what scaling down the library by 100k sq feet will mean though.

A big part of the back of house operations and administrative offices are moving out of the main library to a new location at the County's Northpark Mall site. That took out a big chunk of square footage. They have also better allocated space in the building that can be used much more efficiently than it is being used today. I think you'll see a lot more public facing 'useful' spaces in the new design than the current one.

Austin's new Central Library (great building) is 180,000sqft and cost $126m

Even more important than how the building looks, that new Hunt library is heavily used. When I was student the old Hill library would be a ghost town on most weekends. I'm hopeful that the new library will once again become a very active space for learning and collaboration.

At first sight, what I like about it is that it's creating a strong corner at Tryon, but then curving away from Spirit Square, so that it stands out and isn't overwhelmed.

That is beautiful and with the new Intercontinental across the street what a difference it will make on N Tryon.   

here is Biz Journal article and it is subscriber but you can probably see the renderings too.   The aerial rendering shows a lot a balcony on the top floor.

I like how it curves away from Spirit Square to let it shine on its own.

I'm quite impressed with this design, and what a stark contrast with what's there now.   I suppose I'm a bit naive for thinking this might have become a reality far sooner than 2024:(.

At the risk of irritating others, I have to admit that although the building is amazing, all I really need is to somehow make the current building have the same "interaction with the street" as what's in the rendering.

If someone told me there was a way to remodel the existing library to incorporate all the glass and transparency and light in its interface with the street and pedestrian realm, at a fraction of the cost, I'd be completely on-board.

Why can’t we renovate the existing library?  Do people still use the library besides the homeless?  The design looks great and it will Be  great for the north side.  Just question the amount of money being spent on something that is surely losing visitors for the last 15 years.

I don’t think you can put enough lipstick on that pig.   Tearing it down for this design will be way better.   I think we have all become somewhat jaded because we get these beautiful initial renderings and then they get VE’d to death   I hope they can stay somewhat true to these.  
 

The interior Stairs remind me of the addition my hometown, Indy,  did to their central library in 2007.   They kept the original structure dating to the early 1900’s but made it more of a grand entrance.  The modern addition in the back is similar to this and has become a community gathering place.  It also has become a place for people to hold events.   Check this wedding someone had there.  
 

i think this is great and will be an awesome addition to our community.
