Just read that article and was pretty interesting. My favorite takeaway was that ORF currently has two airlines “extremely interested” in starting service out of ORF. Any guesses on who?

Id definitely bet Alaska is one of them. I can’t really think of another. Maybe Air Canada?

I’m thinkin’ Alaska & Jet Blue. Air Canada returning with service to Toronto and Montreal would be sweet as well.

Air Canada would be great. We would finally go international. Or, what if its a european airline????

Ah, in my dreams.

I gotta think with Breeze looking to expand we’ll hear something about an international flight in the next two years. I think a flight to Toronto is doable though.

In the old days you could see who reacted to what and in what manner.  Man would I LOVE to know who "laughed" at THAT!  Guessing potentially someone out-of-forum...yet nearby.  Ahem.

Man, I wonder... Its almost like there is a certain airport we are head to head with. But im hoping it was just "haha" in good faith, especially since the emoji looks extra happy. But who knows, we got haters out there.

Well, Idk. Here is a direct sampling of their mindset over there ...from (only) the past few months. You decide.

(NOTE: Emphasis below is MINE)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"However, I did get a ballpark figure of “more than 420,000” passengers for August. While decent, ORF had a hair north of 446,000.  I gotta say I’m a bit heartbroken over that figure."

"Hopefully, they show more than 448.6K which is what ORF released for their August numbers. My fingers are crossed."

"{RIC forum member} says that ORF’s passenger numbers will likely fall after the summer beach traffic dies down.  I’m hoping he’s right."

"And hopefully our August numbers will be MUCH better (were there any major weather-related flight cancellations at RIC this month?) - and we can retake our normal position above ORF."

"As the Richmond metro area continues to grow, RIC will come closer and closer to ORFs passenger numbers during the summer and will move further and further past them during other months of the year."

"ORF beat us in June, but we’ll be back."

"Of course ORF got the lion’s share of the grant money for its runway rehabilitation. Yeah - go figure. $13M is a LOT for a "rehab" - would the price tag for a new/parallel runway be $13M or would it be a LOT more than that? DCA is getting only $7.5M for "reconstruction". What's weird - the $13M is more than what DCA and RIC will receive combined. What am I missing??"

"ORF got 406K in May - I'm hoping (and praying) we cracked 410K."

"Also consider: if ORF didn't exist - and RIC got ALL of the traffic from central/southeast Virginia- given RIC's and ORF's totals from last year ."

Why are we living rent free in their head? ORF just hit the 4M mark last year, whereas RIC hit that number in the past. They have international flights and we still don't, and people still drive the hour-and-a-half to take advantage of the deals at RIC.

And that's OK. Norfolk International finally realized it had to do something and so it is. I don't get why RIC sees us as competition...it's about as silly as no one wanting to build an arena because Richmond wants one as well.

All I got to say is we must be doing something right!!

Richmond probably benefits more because if you're somewhere like Williamsburg or New Kent, you could just drive another 30-45 minutes and not worry about a tunnel.

If you're in Hampton or Newport News, you might just make the 20-minute drive to ORF. I'd say RIC gets the advantage by a 60/40 margin.

I don't think RIC has any commercial passenger international flights, unless something has changed recently.

Also, Spirit will be adding daily flights to Boston Logan in April!

I live in Williamsburg and it takes me 35-40 minutes to drive to RIC.  With all the construction on I64 it would take me at least 45-60 minutes to get to ORF. Obviously for the next 2 years RIC will be my preferred airport until the tunnel expansion is completed.

I think thats the problem. They have what supposed to be a bigger airport. Yet our numbers still beat them by a considerable amount, mostly using our military and travel advantage. I dont hate RIC at all, in fact their forum is very active and the members are usually helpful but I do notice hostilities between our two sides have grown. Especially with the fact that both airports are due for some type of expansion.

Additional (very recent) titillating, non-terrestrial transportation tidbits from our neighbors to the North.... Soo very delish! If we somehow beat them again this year (fairly unlikely), surely their heads will EXPLODE!! HAHA.

(Note: any emphasis is mine)-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Not what I wanted to see, but these are strong numbers.  Barely beat ORF who had 385,988."

"After slipping for the summer months, we've [sic] back to beating ORF. Okay - it was by a nose in September - just under 3,000 passengers - but I was honestly thinking that ORF would beat us in September before we flipped the script in the fall, since September can kind of be a leftover/lag month from the summer travel season (whereas October is not). Recall we built a sizeable lead over ORF through May - and ORF chipped into it over the summer. Staying ahead of ORF for the full year is VERY important - RIC needs to be able to lay claim to the unofficial title of "Virginia's busiest airport not counting D.C."
