I need to know.  Is this an old garage?  Root cellar?  Does it connect to the house?   Been wondering about it for years.

Most likely it was a garage. That type of garage was not uncommon way on back in the 20th century.

That is an amazing example of curb front residential garage b/c it's stone like the wall. Atlanta has a lot of those in the near-east neighborhoods built in the 1900-1930 timeframe. They were typically NOT connected to the house. Often, they were added after the house was built.  There are many around Chattanooga. I've heard there are some in the Northshore and Lookout Mtn. & St. Elmo that do connect because the houses are not far from the garage.

I always think of St Elmo when I see these garages!!

Based on the age of that home it could have been built as a carriage house. I am unsure of the age but if it was built prior to 1915 it would have been highly unusual for a home to be built with an auto garage. Carriage houses were converted to garages when autos were starting to gain popularity in the early part of the century, but few homes were built with the idea of a garage for a car.
