If you look closely under the word Metro you can see tiny downtown (c 1935) and I’m astonished by how rural it is less than 3miles from the CBD.

I know this is not really the tread for this, BUT this statement and the corresponding picture really needs to be addressed. Yes look how RURAL NASHVILLE WAS BACK THEN, goes to show why the Fairgrounds are where they are. And why a charter action would have been no issue to make a decision about the racetrack always staying in that location. BUT TIMES HAVE CHANGED! , Nashville isn’t the sleepy ole town she used to be. In today’s Nashville with a robust population and sprawling communities surrounding this once quiet area , this racetrack is out of tune with the needs of its neighbors. If this was a quarry or noisy mill , everyone would be against it and it would have been removed decades ago. It’s time to realize that this piece of the puzzle doesn’t fit anymore and move on to better uses of space.

For a little bit better clarity of exactly what we are seeing here, the tall white structure just under the S in Nashville were Purina? grain silos. demoed I think in the 90s. It stood at the 4th Avenue South where the railroad crosses 4th just before it it becomes Nolensville Road.  I remember the Colloseum well before it burned down.  This was where all the large animal judging was held at the State Fair.   Of course one also must remember that the racetrack when this photo was taken was for horse racing and was dirt.  It would be another two decades before it was changed to auto racing.  The city limits stopped about at the railroad  tressle in Inglewood, so remember the total population  of just UNDER 200,000 INCLUDED that of the whole county.  The city proper was barely over 100,000.

Yes…it converted to the half-mile paved oval in 1957, but actual auto racing has been at the fairgrounds for over 100 years.  There is a LOT of information online that says AUTO racing began at the fairgrounds in 1904.

Remember that even the State Fair realized that it was time to move on, the namesake of this property. And where did they go? That’s right to Lebanon, to a location that has room to grow and access to a major interstate. Just like the SuperSpeedway , also in Lebanon with room to grow and access to a major interstate. Just as the Fair is now developing into something more than it got to be in its old location , so to will Nascar and auto racing once everyone realizes the SuperSpeedway is the best place for auto racing in the Nashville market.

This same area was likely farmland for decades and forest  for centuries. Why is the fact that racing took place there for 100 years means it can never be changed for any other use?  Should Second Avenue have remained warehouses for riverboat commerce?

This shot shows that midtown Nashville has some excellent high-rise and mid-rise density.  It's exciting to see it continue to build up and out!

So true! I often think about how cool it would look if it were 20-30 stories taller. Or if they could now build a taller version right alongside it , how awesome that would be, “ Batman and Robin “

It catches a lot of flack around here simply for being our tallest for over 30 years now, but without it, our skyline instantly becomes really boring and pedestrian. We just need a couple of more daring designs alongside it to push things further.
