Next weeks state of the city address (April 7th) should be very interesting.

What are some of the projects expected to be discussed?

Light Rail extension to Military Circle/Military Circle redevelopment?

Saint Paul's Quadrant projects/progress?

An update on the casino?

Updating Chrysler Hall finally?

However to hit on a different development subject, I want to ask when the heck will someone take the perfect undeveloped land infront of the courthouse and turn it into something. Walking on Granby and then seeing a field of fresh grass kinda ruins the city vibe/feel that I get from other parts of granby.  It would be better use just to let a farmer cultivate the land and harvest wheat than just let it sit there with absolutely no use.

Impossible. The feds own that land and they will sit on it in perpetuity, due to this mythical courthouse expansion that they never intend to build.

If they wanted to extend the courthouse  they could always build UP! Their original building has a hole in the middle of it and even looks like a good base for some type of tower. But just think of what could be built on such a prime piece of land almost in the middle of our Downtown.

Oh believe you me, we all agree. Look up the Granby Towers project to see what could have been.

I dont need to look that one up. Of course as someone who was born and lived in Norfolk, I already know the major disappointment the project ended up bringing. It could have ended up bringing us alot more business and respect for the city we are. However I hope the feds give up the land that is currently to no use.

That was once suggested during the whole Granby Tower fiasco, but the feds declined that option.

In a perfect world, what should happen is the Feds should do a land swap with Norfolk where Norfolk gets the current federal courthouse building site and the Granby Tower site in exchange for the Norfolk Schools Administrations building site. Both sites sit outside of the 100 year flood map and would give the Feds a great site to build any kind of federal courthouse they want on it and have it be as secure of a site that they want. The city could then have a new Schools Admin building built over by the City Hall on the site that not that long ago had a tower proposal.  Doing this would really consolidate the whole Civic Center.  After that, the city could petition for developers to develop the Granby Tower site with a new tower, and have a petition for the renovation and possibly new tower added to the former courthouse building. This would help connect downtown to the Neon District, and give the city 3 new towers (and possibly 4 new towers depending on the design of the federal courthouse.)

Or with the Granby Tower site, it could be cut in half, having York run through it at a pedestrian corridor and have two towers built on those two sites. If that happened, then there would be three residential towers at Granby and Brambleton.

Get the military and the Fascist Feds out of Norfolk, they hold it back!

Are you delusional?
1, our government is definitely not fascist.
2, The Military is one of the biggest providers and contributors to the area.
3, We have the biggest navel base in the world. They are not going anywhere anytime soon or later.
4, Get to work on doing your research for understanding Norfolk and our metro as a whole. You obviously dont understand the benefits we get from the military even if there are a few set backs or obstacles on our way to a city success story.

Ugh this guy isn't even worth your time. The trolls that have infiltrated urbanplanet have way too much time on their hands. Look at this guy's comment history, he has no idea what he's talking about

Yeesh. Norfolk  might not ever recover if it lost the military.  The job losses for Hampton Roads would be devastating.

They could if they built an economy that is not solely dependant on the military....if we diversify our economy here it is  very feasible. I know we are not like other metros but others have weathered through losing the military and ended up coming out better

Then again his suggestion is totally never going to happen. With the biggest navel base in the world we are pretty set to stay a military town.

Talk about a letdown. Norfolk will just pave a parking lot on the former Greenies restaurant site.

Im pretty sure we all learn to just take it in by now, nothing new with another let down in our city.....right?

There is a new 418 unit apartment development proposed for 6659 E. Virginia Beach Blvd (where the mobile home park is located at Newtown Rd).  This is listed on the 23 June planning commission agenda.

The planning department should have a higher standard for what is included in these packages. I’m sure Bonaventure can provide something better than a B&W copy.
