I'm happy! The FSU livery is far better than that of most transit agencies, for sure. :D

One question, I'm thinking NewStar could answer.........as far as the meeting tommorrow night to discuss the changes to rotues 16, 21, 23, 24 and 80X, why the heck was that the chosen venue?! I mean, it's far out on the edge of town and not really convenient for those travelling via StarMetro. I'm going to have to take either the 16 or 18 and walk a half mile, and when the meeting is over, those routes will have stopped running so hopefully people from class will be there so I can bum a ride off of them. Or else it's a $15 taxi ride, plus tip.

The people affected by these routes are the very people who use them......yet the meeting is in a place such as the one tomorrow night. Ironic isn't it?

Anyone who is going to the meeting, can they suggest that the last proposed inbound 23 & 24 not be needed. Leaving at 7:00 would have the 35 overlap with the 23 and the 33 with the 24. As for the location, it should have been held somewhere near the center of town since north, west, and east are all affected.

So for all the various official but anonymous moles on this board, I have a couple of free suggestions regarding the bus system. One is a small idea and the other is a little more grand. If this wasn't my home, I'd be charging for this advice but what does a ghost need with money?

The first suggestion is to upgrade the graphics. If we're going to big time, we need to behave big time. There are several signage design firms that have extensive transit experience. I'd be talking to someone like Pannier Graphics. The last I heard, they had the contracts for the Chicago, NYC, Boston, a bunch of California cities and the South Florida Tri-Rail. I'm all about buying locally but this is so important that we should be using a specialist. We have this unfortuante history with our bus system. We're reinventing the system and need to shake off all associations with the old system. We need to change the design and especially the palette.

The brings me to my second suggestion. In an earlier post, NewStar talked about tearing down the current transit plaza and rebuilding it. I have a better idea. That city block is one of the most valuable in town. Let's sell it. It's worth a bundle. There are lots of developers who would snap it up in a Tallahassee minute. I'm in favor of moving the transit plaza to the land around the Amtrak station accross from the coffee shop. (Dan's going to love that).

On the negative side, we lose the intermodal connection with the Greyhound station, but I doubt there is much of that. That's the only negative I can see.

It would turn an otherwise almost vacant space into a vibrant neighborhood. It plays into the Gaines street redevelopment. One day, we'll get some sort of transit back on those rails (either Amtrak if the folks in DC ever get any brains, or perhaps the regional light rail that USED to be in the 2020 plan). It's close to FAM and FSU, whose student and employes are both major transit users. Building a new plaza in a new location means you don't have to shut down the old plaza until the new one is done.

I told you that it was a bit more grand than the graphics idea but I suspect that it would be easier to do. No ones feelings would be hurt, developers get a cherry location downtown, and we buy a much less expensive lot in a better location.

Of course, we still need to honor Dr. Steele. I thought about the idea of moving the statue to the new plaza, but I'd keep his statue on the current corner and require that the tallest building on the property be named the "Steele" Building.

There are a thousand stories in the naked city. This is one of them.

Both excellent suggestions! We hope to have a larger graphic presence in the future.

On the second. I had thought about that idea, but there are some transit system design concerns Tennessee is very heavily used by our buses. It is the perfect feeder for a terminal. The Gaines St project has rejected the idea of including transit at this time. They are willing to look at it in the future, but not right now. There are some other issues, but nothing that can

Also remember that Jason's deli is hoping to set up shop next door at the Floridan building, there will be a good bit of retail on the ground floor there as well. I'm not quite sure if this will affect the Bus Terminal at all considering the distance between the two sites. There may be a parking garage between The retail component of the Floridan tower and the Loading area at the bus terminal.

This may not be a major issue, but something just came to mind when TJ mentioned the "possible" parking garage.

The city was awarded a federal grant (~$600,000) back in YR 2001/2002 which was to be used (in addition with future funding) in the design a new multi-modal transportation facility very near the Tennessee/Monroe St. intersection. I don't remember if additional funding has been awarded since, but I wonder what affect will this new parking garage (as part of the Floridan development) will have on this funding. Will the city have to return the grant(s), and if so, will we decide to include a multi-modal transportation facility as part of the planned garage.

My only concern is will (or how) will the Florida project be delayed pending outcome of the usage of this federal grant. Or maybe this situation has already been resolved?

Yeah, that's this developer, McKibbon Hotel Group. The city will be partially funding this garage and operating it similar to that at Kleman on the one on Calhoun Street.

The garage is pictured in the site plan above, in the location you specify jpl.
