  1. {TJ said that this post belonged in the off topic section. I guess that Arena Football is more like new construction than Leif winning a bunch of change. Anyhow, sorry for the confusion and please remove the offending misplaced post.} Tallahassee native, amazing Frisbee player (he throws sort of upside down and backwards) and FSU student, Leif Force ended the World Series of Poker earlier this week in 11th place with a total win of over a million dollars. http://www.bluffmagazine.com/news/newsArti...?newsID=1101236
  2. Like one of our former Lieutenant Governors used to say, "spank you very much".
  3. For awhile, there was a PR firm in that building who did some work for me. It's a very cool building inside and out in a very interesting part of town. I hope that someone comes up with a rehab plan for it instead of tearing it down.
  4. Your sig, "The capital city of Florida and the southland at it's best" is actually a line from the Bing Crosby/Andrews Sisters tune.
  5. An Apple store would be a great addition to the local retail space but like the guy said, it's going to be awhile. In Apple corporate speak, Tallahasse is a "Tier 3" city. There are several things going for Tallahassee which might help. The Xserve supercomputer cluster at FAMU has made a blip on the Apple radar. A lot of Apple stores in are in Rouse malls (acquired by General Growth). Governor's Square is a Rouse/General Growth property. I'd be willing to put a small wager on an Apple Store in that new Welaunee Mall that y'all don't believe is going to happen.
  6. That's very good news. I'm a fan of the St. Joe company. I wouldn't want to live in Southwood, way too "Truman Show" for me, but in general, these guys are straight shooters and pay attention to the environment.
  7. There are a lot of tunes with Tallahassee in the title or the words of the tune. There's the fiddle tune named Tallahassee, that for a long time, opened the Channel 6 morning show. I don't know who wrote it but former state champion fiddler, Wayne Martin (who runs that great restaurant in Blountstown) recorded it for the TV station. It's on a lot of old time fiddle albums. The best known Tallahassee tune is probably "Tallahassee Lassie" by Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon. Bing Crowsby and the Andrew Sisters had a hit tune, "Tallahassee", which was in the movie, Variety Girl. They also did a tune called "Apalachacola". Jo Stafford also recorded the tune as did several others back in the 40's. Then there's that tune that was written for the city centennial titled "Call of Tallahassee." It's on local legend Doug Gauss's first album, Florida Natural. Speaking of Doug, does anyone have a copy of his Christmas album? There's a new folk song by Alaskan singer Willis Fireball called "Going to Tallahassee" which has some nice harmonies. Heather Bishop recorded her own tune, Tallahassee. Billy Lee Riley has a country tune named Tallahassee. In the emo/folk genre (is there such a thing), check out "Tallahassee" by Mark Bradlyn The Mountain Goats did a Tallahassee album with a tune called "Southwood Plantation Road" on it. It's not my brand of bourbon but I'm told that some people like it. They also have a tune called Tallahassee. Also in the rock genre, there's Sweet Tallahassee by Sool. Bruce Cockburn has "King Kong Goes to Tallahassee". Alternative band, the Hideous North, has "The Oriental Hooker and the Man from Tallahassee". For extra credit, which local politico does this tune seem to fit. No...don't answer here. Think about it and have a laugh. The old (1930's) blues act, Spark Plug Slim and Tallahassee Tight, recorded "Tallahassee Women" which is a real nice tune and worth tracking down if you don't already have it. A more contemporary blues act, Swamp Cabbage, has a tune called Tallahassee In the classical genre, there's Tallahassee Suite Number 1, Bygone Memories by Jascha Heiftez. I know I've missed a bunch of other tunes. Educate me.
  8. I've been watching Sunland on my infrequent trips through that piece of town. I'm wondering if the new development is ever going to happen. I'm betting that the building, based on it's age, is full of asbestos, and will cost someone big money to mitigate before it's torn down.
  9. I've been following your discussions for awhile now and finally took the time to join. I live in rural Leon County, have a very interesting job, and am an advocate of in-filling instead of sprawl. I'll be posting about preservation of our natural and cultural resources, community organizing and responsibility. Ghost
