Specific designs for that area are still in play. Parking seems to be something Vanderbilt believes is outside of the long term need with regard to broader University goals. 

I think this is interesting to watch; Vanderbilt seems firm in its understanding that mass parking will not be a long term University concern.

Interesting. They could definitely build structured parking west of Natchez Trace. But they have tons of employees in the medical complex. They could maybe move parking to remote locations and run more shuttles.

Just remember we will lose 4 towers on West End when Carmichael comes down. Even thought they are sort of ugly, that will be a huge open gap we are not use to seeing and will take some getting use to.

^ ^ ^ My eyes will gladly welcome their removal.   ; )   The new 5-6 story classics, and the 200 foot iconic "Cathedral of Learning" type tower, and trees long the sidewalk that will replace them are going to look magnificent for several blocks along West End.

Demo permit for the first of Carmichael Towers West buildings was just issued on the ePermits site.  I believe the plan is to begin demo this summer, and Towers East will go next summer.

The western most tower will be dismantled, but the second one will be imploded per someone I know who works for Vanderbilt in the management of the facilities. I don't know yet how the eastern two will be demolished next year.

Just back from Florida where I visited an awesome Gothic tower.  Bok Tower (1929) is very much of a similar proportion to the 20 story Vandy tower, though I don't think Vandy's will be as exquisitely beautiful.  It helps to be sited in a peaceful garden... hopefully the view from the central campus will offer some semblance of the tranquility of Bok.

Knowing Vandy, they'll build a brick wall and then plant trees in front of the brick wall...and we won't even know that beautiful building is there.
