They keep saying they're going to lose something if the stadium is built.  Well...what is it?  You have a brand new flea market building.  Racing will still be there...and possibly greatly improved.  The TN state fair has already said they want to move to a larger plot of land.

It's never been about Soccer, this fight has always been a microcosm for way bigger stuff than Soccer. As Nashville continues growing into a true cosmopolitan city, they're feeling left behind by all of the changes. They see new construction and new residents as foreign things encroaching on their community, and this entitlement is driving them to extremes like the perpetual funding of a crappy lawsuit. When you think about their perspective, is there any better representation of this conflict than the Old Fairgrounds vs. the "Globalized Yuppie" Sport that is Soccer? They're going to keep drudging through this thing, kicking and screaming all the way, until it's built.

They are losing their past.

104.5 interviewed Shane Smiley. He was all over the place with a lot of his comments. He brought up a lot of the same talking points we've heard over and over. "I'm not against soccer. Right team, wrong location" (or something to that effect). "Why can't they play at Nissan Stadium?" "There's no signed contract." "The Metro Charter does not allow for mixed use on this property," etc.

But when questioned if the Fairgrounds property is being underutilized/not up to its potential and what his grand vision of it would be, it's quite obvious that he had put all of his efforts into fighting this development, and not an ounce of thought into what the property *could* be. Even when addressing the new buildings, he complained that there were fewer vendor spaces (didn't mention whether or not they were actually losing money because of less capacity, though...).

The SoF people want nothing to change. Maybe improve existing buildings, but no alterations to the current site. They act like it is their Fairgrounds. Yes, they represent a group of "Old Nashville" (the Nostalgics) that have invested a lot of time, money, energy, and memories in the Fairgrounds site -- but I think they fail to acknowledge that most people in Davidson County avoid that area because of what it is. A sh*thole. Maybe more people visit the Flea Market if it isn't held at a sh*thole with sh*thole buildings. Maybe more people attend expos there if it isn't a sh*thole. Maybe NASCAR returns if the track isn't a dilapidated sh*thole. Hosting a Fair that isn't even in the top 10 in Tennessee isn't going to help improve things. The site needs some new investment. It needs a new draw. 

Now one concern I can understand is parking availability. I do think that Metro, as well as Nashville SC, need to help spell out a plan that allows for ample parking availability for the Flea Market and other expo events. 

The bottom line for me is that I think that the Soccer Stadium and mixed use development will be a catalyst for massive change on that site. With the new deal in place, it isn't going to cost the city anything, and it will generate revenue and development that was not previously there. I think it will be a *huge* net positive for the city as a whole. And I also think it does make the Speedway expansion more viable now. This could really be a one-of-a-kind sports, entertainment, and expo complex. And anyone that wants to get in the way of that vision for their own selfish reasons can go sit on a broomstick.

NASCAR's not so much a sport in decline as it's a sport that got too big for its britches...so to speak.  It tried to go full mainstream...and it's just not that.  The best years (maybe not for money and watchers) was when guys like Dale Sr., Petty, Gordon, Martin, Tony etc were racing...bumping...arguing...before they tried to get younger and younger and reach a demographic that wouldn't necessarily live and die by the sport.

If they truly try to refocus on some southern small tracks and take away some of the twice-a-track long races at other tracks...it will be a healthier sport in the long run.

I compare it to a great indie actor who decides to do blockbusters and makes a lot more money...but the soul of who he really is...is missing.  So...he goes back and does the indie movies...wins an oscar...and is happier and more fulfilled.

I hate how dumb and gotcha politics have become. We have sick people so we cannot invest in infrastructure until that is solved! Uhhh what.

My kids went to Belmont with the J+TL guys and their keyboard player was one of our baristas at Bond Coffee Company.  Great guys!  The fam has seen them in concert several times and we are pumped to have them connected to Nashville SC like this!

BTW, I think this is my 1,000th posting.

Nashville SC Unveils Club's Rituals and Activations for 2020 MLS Opener

 

Alternative rock band Judah and the Lion to perform the NSC Anthem; CMT’s Nashville’s Charles Esten to sing the National Anthem; NSC introduces Gibson Guitar Riff with musician Lzzy Hale

NASHVILLE (Feb. 18, 2020) – Nashville Soccer Club unveiled today a series of rituals and activations that will take place during the club’s inaugural match in Major League Soccer against Atlanta United FC on Feb. 29, presented by Renasant Bank. Fans planning to attend will want to get in their seats early to see Judah and the Lion, Charles Esten and Lzzy Hale featured in a night when sports and entertainment come together in Music City.

In a partnership with Judah and the Lion, Nashville SC has teamed up with the Nashville based alternative rock band to create the official club anthem titled “Never Give Up On You.” The band’s 20-minute performance, which will include the anthem, will take place after both teams leave the field following warm-ups.

Following the anticipated entrance of both teams on the pitch, American singer and actor Charles “Chip” Esten will perform the National Anthem. The multitalented artist is no stranger to the Music City and has cemented his place in the industry with his songwriting and countless live performances. Esten, a soccer advocate himself, was a key supporter of the #MLS2Nashville campaign that brought MLS to Music City.

As Nashville SC players set up on the pitch to kick off their inaugural season in MLS, fans will want to pay attention to The Backline section where rock artist Lzzy Hale will be the first to perform the Gibson Guitar Riff. A GRAMMY-winning singer and songwriter with her band Halestorm, Lzzy is renowned as one of the best vocalists in rock and roll throughout her career and will now spearhead a new trend for Nashville SC fans. The Gibson Guitar Riff is a special ritual that will showcase different artists throughout the season as they increase the energy by riffing live on an NSC customized Gibson guitar right before kickoff.

In addition to the exciting performances in store for the home opener, Nashville SC will be unveiling its collaborative community project “One Nashville Under Gold” banner. The project is a collection of images representing Nashvillians from all walks of life, symbolizing the club’s motto; One Nashville Under Gold, as well as MLS’s “Soccer for All” initiative. The banner will be displayed at each home match and will highlight our fans, supporters and community partners across the region. Nashville SC’s honorary flag bearers for this match will be youth from the International Teen Outreach Program of Glencliff High School and the 101st Airborne Division, Screaming Eagles, of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

A special section of the stadium will be presented in the home opener as Nashville SC unveils Section 615, presented by DEX Imaging. Named after the area code of the Music City, this section is dedicated to people, groups and community organizations who are doing good work in and around Nashville. The first guest of the season will be Oasis Center, a nationally recognized organization designed to help young people in Middle Tennessee move into a happy, healthy, and productive adulthood. In addition, to Section 615, Nashville SC will also be introducing “Our Hero of the Match” presented by Hyundai, a matchday moment to celebrate those members making an impact in our community.

The blue octagon looks so much better than the yellow octagon, and no octagon at all looks best. I hope the crest eventually just is a circle with the logo, which looks very good IMO, and the team seems to be subtly embracing.

That's right. The octagon makes it look like a construction sign.
