Virgin Group Ltd. has paid $11 million to take ownership of a prominent site on Nashville's famed Music Row — as the British conglomerate attempts to jumpstart its stalled plans for a $100 million luxury hotel.

The company announced Wednesday that it will own and fund the proposed hotel, which was not its original plan when it debuted the project in April 2014

"The hotel, originally set to open in fall 2016, now will open in 2018, Raul Lea, CEO of Virgin Hotels, said. The hotel is designed to include 240 rooms and 15 condos."

^ ^ ^   Here's the Tennessean article:

Wonder if they will spread the hotel out further in the site, thus making the structure lower, or if they will perhaps sell part of the property and keep the hotel tower in the 17-story range?  Should all be interesting to follow as it unfolds.

I'm particularly excited by this:

“Nashville’s time is now, and we want to be part of that excitement,” Branson said in a prepared statement. “We hope our first venture in Nashville will open the doors for more Virgin opportunities and more global travelers to enjoy Nashville’s Southern hospitality.”

It sure sounds like Branson just might bring Virgin America or maybe even Virgin Atlantic to BNA...

Next you know it, this project will have become a four story Quality Inn.  They had better wow us since they destroyed a beautiful piece of local history in order to build this thing.

I was wowed by the original design with the condo tower.  Gotta hope they at least come with something "forward-thinking"...but I have a sinking feeling we're going to be underwhelmed.
