I wonder whether these huge video boards make the planned residential units for the old Duke bldg just a wee bit less marketable?  I suppose not since the video board will be pretty low to the ground.  Not sure how I feel about these additions to Uptown even though my feelings are useless to the outcome.  Lived in Manhattan 14 years before moving to Charlotte, and since June, have been in NYC 50% of my time.  I am definitely more of a Flatiron, Union Square, West Village, Greenwich Village kind of guy, and have always despised Times Square and still do.   But alas, I suppose mega boards are probably fitting for the core Business District.

The Green brings color and texture to our Downtown.  Illuminated billboards...IDK.  I guess anything to get the attention of the cars racing down Church.

This would be very cool as long as the advertisements were done well. There’s a screen like this in Raleigh North Hills that looks great. I remember walking past it and seeing it show off a recent Panthers win. Something like that would be awesome in LU and give the city a bit of a New York vibe.

Actually, I'd rather see these massive video boards covering all exposed sides of the parking garages we've got.  I'm looking at you Ally Center parking garage and the Legacy Union monstrosity behind Honeywell.

Especially when directly across Tryon they nailed it with all your points. I was also shaking my head this past Sunday when tailgating. This is a problem in a lot of developments in the past 10 years or so. I don't buy the excuse that not every development needs to have retail/pedestrian focus. Because that excuse then gets used for most redevelopment resulting in bland and boring spaces instead of place making where people want to be. Bless

I think I’ve lamented the base enough. It is what it is at this point. 

I had super high-hopes for this project, a mall or multiple major retailers etc. based on rumors.  I think it just annoying that it was such a large block with so many anchor tenants that it was a missed opportunity. It’s not at all bad. Just a missed opportunity for the neighborhood. 

Theres no reason it couldn’t have looked like the below:

 

The architecture of the buildings from like. The 4th floor up is fine otherwise.   But a different base. Oh well. Maybe Brooklyn Village can look like that (which renderings over the past 20 years have looked similar to). But as I said before. It’s hard to call this project a disappointment or missed opportunity otherwise. It just goes to show developers have different priorities that may not always align with the neighborhood or stakeholders.

600 South Tryon from a couple of angles back front etc.  Retail spaces still available I wish they would do pop up shops or lower the rent to fill them up.

the new retail spaces at 600 South Tryon are much more visible and hopefully will lease better.  

 

that Poplar St sign is a ghost street no street there but the sign is!

Honestly, whenever they announce that it'll be started. Nothing we know is officially official. I've had conversations but they aren't ready to announce anything.

When this tops out, does that leave Moxy as the only high rise U/C uptown or am I forgetting other towers? SouthEnd seems to be soaking up the high rises.

Until Vela (approved), and the next two buildings associated with Legacy Union start, yes. Maybe 2024 we get some Intercontinental action. Also sketch plan for the duke data center parcel is moving along and there should be announcement on that in the coming months.

I'm glad you grabbed that first picture because I've been wondering what was up with those five windows.  Does anyone know what happened here?  Thos clearly aren't the original panes of glass and this building is too new to have mismatched windows.
