A parking garage would be awful here.  It's a park.  Keep it's essence as a park.

That's why I could see a "Bookends" type development working here; a parking garage that actually has a different primary focus and doesn't look or feel like a garage. But at some point, as this thing continues to build out and densify, surface parking isn't going to be enough and will start to be a functional limitation within the development. I think a multipurpose garage needs to be woven into the fabric of this district. But just a run of the mill, "GTA" type garage would be a poor choice.

But, it is highly likely that anything developed along Mayberry is going to have structured parking and is going to be exactly what you describe. Thus, I'm not sure what the debate is about.

From memory to monument: Mayberry’s ballpark revival heads for home

Good article. For those interested in the history of baseball in Greenville, Mike Chibbaro’s book is a good one to read. https://greenvillejournal.com/history/from-memory-to-monument-mayberrys-ballpark-revival-heads-for-home/?utm_source=Community+Journals+Master+List&utm_campaign=ad8f72a6c7-Greenvillejournal+Jan+12+2023_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c0ca6f9fea-ad8f72a6c7-132958159

I see the observation tower construction is moving right along!

Only in Greenville. The city needs to pass a few more master plans that never get implemented so city council can feel better about themselves.

I mean, c'mon, asking for a tax giveaway? City has invested over $60million in adjacent land, ballooning this lots' property value many times over. As recently as 7 yrs ago owner, owner leased this land for $1/yr to an urban farmer. Now, its value potential is through the roof. How much free money is enough? Developer can make these improvements on own dime and still make a killing.

If it were ANYWHERE in the city it would be eligible for the benefit, since it is a historic building. The location has no bearing on it.

This property owner is eligible, of course. It is just frustrating when developers get so much help (investment) from the city and then come back for a second bite at the apple.

This plot and adjacent plot were bought up by two big names within a 3 month span back in 2012 knowing full well that the park would multiply their investment. Then, when it does, they ask for more tax breaks.

Imagine a developer benefiting from infrastructural investment provided by ReWa with the Big Dig, and then suing ReWa for taking the land 300 feet below their property (this is a real scenario, and this developer did just that).

Technically, you own the land underneath to the core of the earth or something like that, IIRC.  Sounds like ReWa missed getting some sort of approval.  Admittedly, it is pretty petty to bring a suit over it.

Construction is slated to start sometme in 2027 or 2028.,:dontknow:

It was supposed to start construction in August. Why is this city always so damn slow with getting anything done? The Church Street and Cultural Corridor projects have also not started construction even though they were supposed to months ago.

Actually, the Church Street timeline was updated a while back to say winter, and they have removed the existing street lights from the bridge.
