I don't see any rippling in that photo. Can anyone enlighten me? The glass never has a perfectly flat reflection if that's what you're basing it on.

The areas where the glass looks "liquid". I don't think the cannons were close enough for it to be heat related, but more shock wave from the sound. If the cannon shockwave is big enough to set off car alarms (as they warned), then it would be big enough to make glass vibrate.

Vibrate yes....distort?, I don't think so. Are you sure that's not just a reflection of the smoke that is in the air?

When they imploded the Hudson's building in downtown Detroit they had a few windows blown out in the general vicinity of the building. But it took a couple thousand pounds of explosives to make that happen.

sparky05 said he witnessed the glass oscillating like "The Matrix" firsthand (see his post back a couple^^^). I didn't see it, but that's what it looks like in this picture. Who knows.

Those cannons were pretty large, and I could hear the sound bouncing between the buildings when they were going off.

I also saw the windos vibrate. I as standing along the River in the back of the DeVos Place. Each time the cannons fired, the window would vibrate and slowly stop before the next one fired. I don't think it would be the smoke, but I am not a specialist.

Of course they vibrated I saw them too.

I was standing over by the post office

and you could feel the thump in your

chest about every 4th or fifth time.

When the cannon aimed to north east

went off. While the smoke driffted across

the river to my south.

Of course they vibrated. I'm just not sure would be a noticeable "Matrix effect." I don't doubt you could tell they were vibrating. Every glass building I've seen shows a distorted reflection all the time, so that photo doesn't seem unusual. If we had a video we could see the reflections moving as the windows vibrate.

What I saw wasn't a relection or smoke and mirrors (IMO). The glass oscillated only when the cannons were going off and stopped when they were done. Yes, there was a relection in the glass from the sunset before the cannons went off and the reflection was there after the smoke cleared. Whatever happened to the glass happened as a reaction to the cannons. I find it hard to believe it was because of smoke, because when the first cannon was shot, I saw the glass oscillate and the dang smoke hadn't even made it that high in the sky yet to cause any distortion. I agree with Sparky's comparison of the "Matrix" effect.

Nope, I was watching from Pearl Street. I distinctly saw something that was reminiscent of a ripple pattern from the shockwave of the cannon. Hence my reference to the Matrix.

I knew I should have taken my HD cam along...

Pasted from the December newsletter:

River House Construction Update

The caissons are complete & several of the grade beams have been poured. The base for the tower crane has also been installed. For the next month, you will see more excavation, reinforcing steel and concrete for the foundations and footings to prepare to pour basement slabs. The basement floor should be poured at the end of January!

My guess is that it will be at least February before they start to go vertical

With all that rebar going in, it looks like River House is going to have a rock solid foundation. Are the architects and builders the same one that designed and built the orginal Bridgewater Place? To me that building seems to be very well constructed judgeing by the fact that the fit and finish atleast on the exterior has held up very well up over time and still looks like the day it was built.

For anyone that wants to know, through my research for heights of towers, I was able to get in contact with the architect, and found out the official heights of the tower. To the roof of the machine room on the main roof of the tower the building will measure 406 feet from the westside of the building, of 404 feet from the south elevation, the front/main elevation because of the slight slope of the site. That makes this officially a 400-footer. Very impressive. I can't wait to see how this will interact with the rest of the skyline. It will be an interesting look to say the least. Hopefully, this gives future downtown developers thinking big the courage and/or incentive to max out their projects, height-wise.

Wow! 406 is huge. Thanks for the info LMichigan. Development thread updated to reflect the new height.

Well, the main roof is still at 393' minus the nearly 4-and-a-half foot parapet wall, but that's still an increase of 10 or feet from the original proposal, I think. Officially, though, 404 or 406 is the number depending on where you measure it.

I think we'll use the 406 number. :)

The last I had it at was 393.
