Here are some shots of some other 17-story towers proposed, under construction, or recently completed elsewhere just to analyze how the Tower at Main and Gervais stacks up:

I think that public safety tower in Raleigh is spectacular. I personally prefer the variations of facade - not too simple, but not overly detailed. It appears just right for use as a law enforcement highrise facility, in my opinion. If that were being built in SC, I would be cheering regardless of which city it were located in. I think it would fit well into Columbia's current skyline, and perhaps Greenville's someday as well. :shades:

The Raleigh Marriott is a very boring building. Even the street design is horrible. The side that faces the convention center has no doors, and the side the faces Fayetteville Street puts too much emphasis on drivers.

TMG is 100x better than that.

The public safety tower is kinda weird. I'd rather see something with one box that has a decorative feature on its roof. Thats my biggest complaint about Columbia... we need more buildings like BofA Plaza.... except with more street retail going on.

Interesting post. I think, at least judging by the artist's rendering, that our tower is superior in design.

Speaking as a design critic...

That public safety building in Raleigh rivals it with the clean, modern lines, but it is too dense -- too many different volumes... like the designers didn't know when to quit.

The Raleigh Marriott is clean, but just so typical.

Williams Mullen tower, Richmond is an interesting throwback. I'd have to see the real thing and how the materials play out.

That casino is just obnoxiously post-modern... like Michael Graves designed it when he was on break from making wacky teapots for Target or something.
