Here's an interested tidbit: It's going to LEED Silver certification, and if it passes, it will be the first LEED certified building in Hampton Roads.

Wachovia will not be the first LEED building in Hampton Roads.

ODU's Engineering and Computational Science Building is also LEED certified. It is the first LEED-certified higher education building in Virginia.

Hermitage Elementary School in Virginia Beach is the first K-12 LEED school in Hampton Roads.

It maybe the first commercial LEED-certified building in HR. Or perhaps, it will be the first LEED-Silver building (A higher standard than LEED certified.) Either way, Wachovia and Nusbaum should be saluted for their commitment to environmentally-friendly design.

For anyone who does not recognize LEED - it stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Here's a link: www.usgbc.org

I should have been more specific. Wachovia Center will be the first high-rise office building to be LEED certified in Hampton Roads.

Just a footnote on the symphony hall idea. I've heard the Va Symphony recently in Chrysler and the acoustics have been improved this season. There is a cluster of wooden panel baffles placed above the stage. They really do seem to sweeten the sound and bring the strings much more to to forefront. There's a bit more ambient sound and the bass is more pronounced as well. Another minor issue: even though there are 2500 seats and a number of them are empty during most concerts, those seats are mostly sold, so they do benefit the orchestra in spite of the fact that nobody sits in them. It also makes it nice when you need somewhere to place a bulky coat or a smuggled case of Bud Lite.

This article actually has more to do with this thread than the Hilton thread. Tons of good news to go around today. :)

Wachovia Center 68% leased

"There's never been an office building in Norfolk that's been 68 percent leased before starting construction, at least not in my lifetime," Nusbaum said.

"We're dealing with other prospects and hope to have other announcements soon. But to be at this point this soon is very comforting."

I'm starting to like the building design more and more. Definitely a step in the right direction for Norfolk. I just wish the apartments weren't so similar looking to the apartments and condos on Boush St. In addition, I wish the store fronts didn't have the TC like awnings. Steel "awnings" or overhangs would add a little more city like feel. The new "strip mall" over off 21st St used mini steel overhangs in place of traditional awnings and it looks good.

Hi Vdogg!

That link doesn't seem to be working. Can you please take a look when you get a chance?

I just got to my home computer, and the link works here. My work PC may have been blocking access. If you were trying to access this from your job and couldn't open it, it is probably due to the filters they had in place. Try it again when u get home if this is the case.

Monticello garage will be demolished in April

"This will be a catalyst to develop the rest of the north end of downtown," said Alan Nusbaum, president of the company that bears his family name.

The city will spend $53.4 million to build the two parking garages. However, the garages will be paid for with parking fees and will not affect the city's debt limit.

Roderick Woolard, the city's director of economic development, said the project will pay $2 million in direct taxes to the city in its first year and $3.5 million in its tenth year.

Construction on the project, to be located on a stop of the new light rail system, is to begin in April with the demolition of the Monticello Avenue garage.

Nearly 1,250 parking spaces will be lost during the two years of construction without the garage, a surface parking lot and on-street metered spaces.

Monticello garage and parking lot closing March 29th. :)

Monticello Avenue Garage and Monticello Lot will close on March 29 to accommodate construction of the Wachovia Center. Relocation of the monthly parkers and communication with various businesses and event organizers has begun.

It's gonna be great to finally see this thing start to rise. It's been too long since we've had a highrise "validly" under construction.

Parking spaces about to dwindle downtown

For all the complaining in this article you'd think it was the end of the world. What the pilot hasn't mentioned is that once the Center is completed there would be twice as many spaces in that location as there were previously. Progress hurts, and just like with the NSU situation, people are gonna need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture here. Yes, we will all be inconvenienced, but the benefits from both Wachovia and LR will be enormous.

that is like saying the MacArthur was an inconvenience when it was under construction because that was built on several parking lots.

The Pilot certainly has a gift for turning a diamond into a lump of coal.

The huge number of comments about an inconvenience that will affect a small percentage of people is characteristic of what's wrong in this town. People no longer going to Tides games because they are the "Norfolk" Tides rather than "Tidewater." More people comment on stuff like this than real national stories. If a major distaster happened here, killing hundreds, people would be complaining about parking or something lame like that. How did we get to be so stupid?

I find it hilarious that the Pilot has turned this into a safety issue. Build a building and all your students are at risk.

My understanding, and the Pilot is too focused on the negative, well just plain too ignorant to notice, is that construction is to begin this week. Correct?
