National Theatre

Robbin Thompson and his band take the stage at 8PM tonight (Saturday, January 8th) at The National. If you want to bask in the "Sweet Virginia Breeze" wafting across the footlights, some tickets are still available.

PS: If you get downtown early, you can take a twirl across the RVA Ice Rink.

There seems to be some confusion as to how long the ice-skating season will continue. The rink is on the south side of East Broad between 6th and 7th Streets -- diagonally across from The Nat.

Amplified sound in music venues can simply get out of hand on many occasions -- to the point where sung lyrics and individual musical riffs are totally obscured.

Paul Hammond of Carver & Jackson Ward News has posted some Craiglist comments about the sound situation at The National. Generally, it is masterfully manipulated by expert sound persons, but occasionally it's mishandled.

I think THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS coming into the Nat Monday, January 31st is sold out, and I believe that GIRL TALK had a full house last night (Saturday.)

Do you Richmond music fans realize how much out-of-town travel has been eliminated from your itineraries since the National, Hat Factory, The Canal Club, The Camel, Alley Katz, Capital Ale House Music Hall and other downtown venues have come on line? In fact these same clubs/theatres are attracting out-of-towners TO the Capital City in large numbers.

Florida-based destination clubs such as OFF THE HOOKER in The Lady Bird Building at Shockoe Slip don't take a chance on Richmond unless they know it's prime territory. Same as Cobb CineBistro in Stoney Point Fashion Park which is the top grosser in its chain.

What irritates me is the almost total blackout of musical coverage in the Richmond print media. Unless as an outsider (I'm an expatriot living in New York) I am not privy to blogs that may review visiting artists' concerts, the Times Dispatch, (since Melissa Ruggieri's departure), Style Weekly, RVA News are next to worthless in their coverage.

And keep your eyes on The HIPPODROME THEATRE on North Second Street! It's rumored that New York's BLUE NOTE and B.B. KING's will be booking some of the attractions into the new theatre/club which seats 450 patrons OR 700+ standees (less than half the Nat's capacity.) However, it's adjacent building known as The Taylor Mansion is also undergoing total renovation and will have a 250-seat club, bars, balconies overlooking the HIPP's stage and a full-service restaurant. The HIPP's first attraction is Richmond's Mayor Jones delivering his State of the City address on February 3rd.

On another note: Last year, The Nat's parent, THE NORVA in Norfolk, was named best music hall in the country by a prominent music website.

I seem to recall reading that the Giavos recently sold Gibson's Grill... can anyone confirm? Any idea why or the identity of the new ownership?

The reason given for the Giavos' disinvestment in GIBSON'S GRILL at The National is so that Katherine Giavos can devote time to their newly built venture called STELLA's on Lafayette Avenue between Monument and West Franklin Streets in the far west end. STELLA's (named for Katherine's mother) may open in late spring or early summer.

Meanwhile, GIBSON GRILL's website hasn't changed. http://www.gibsonsgrill.com

After all my kvetching about the lack of press coverage of entertainers on Richmond stages, Corey Amado puts up a terrific review of the Girl Talk concert last Saturday night at the sold-out National.

I didn't realize when posting the Girl Talk review that it wasn't working. It is working now.

As with BRIGHT EYES on March 6th and THE FLAMING LIPS on May 15th,Ticketmaster advises: "Sorry, no exact matches were found, but other tickets may be available."

The National's response is: "If there is no possibility of additional tickets being released at a later date, we will put up a sold-out notice."

So, don't despair unless you see "sold-out" beside the performer's name on the Nat's website Schedule and/or on its facebook page.

While Richard Wagner's weird and heavy Germanic opera, DIE WALKURE, had its opening night on the much larger stage of The Carpenter Theatre last Friday, another spectacle of horror was taking place a block away at The National. GWAR in its outrageous garb and masks was spilling fake blood all over the place.

The Avalanche Tour, originally scheduled for the Richmond Coliseum tomorrow night at 6PM, .

has been moved to The National

From todays RTD:

http://www2.timesdis...nal-ar-1010984/

Visit http://www.thenationalva.com for more details.

Coliseum shows are generally far more elaborate from a scenic and lighting standpoint than music acts that play the much smaller National. It should be interesting to see how the Nat's decent sized stage and fly system handles The Avalanche show.

It's just unbelievable to me that there is not a single review of THE FLAMING LIPS spectacle Sunday night at the National in any of the local media I have been able to find.

There is an incredible video on The Nat's facebook page which shows the group being magically introduced at the top of a staircase while an elaborate light show is played on a cyclorama.

Then, to top it off, one of the band members encloses himself in a transparent "baloon" and literally floats as high as the balcony over the heads of the audience before drifting back down to the stage...helped along by outstretched arms of audience members.

Undoubtedly, the most elaborate show ever on the Nat's stage.

Somehow or another, the video, which can be accessed only by facebook members, worked for me one time, then re-locked itself.

If you can access the Nat's facebook page, do so by all means.

Sometimes this video "let's you in" but most often it doesn't.

Some new "wall" pictures have been posted on the Nat's facepage.

I'll bet ANYBODY a quarter the first photo is not the National, eventhough the poster claims it is. Look carefully and you'll note an outdoor "atmospheric" style, similar to Richmond's Carpenter Theatre but less elaborate.

My guess it is a larger theatre in another city.

All other pictures in the collection are genuine shots of the Nat.
