The National started its latest News Letter with this:

"Big News! This Friday (tomorrow) the State parking lot (sic) next to Gibson's Grill on 7th Street will be open on show nights with plenty of parking spaces."

My note: It is not a "lot" but a six or seven level parking deck that has had an arrangement with Richmond Center Stage since the opening of that facility in September.

Check out the Nat's site for a listing of upcoming concerts:

I had a great conversation last week here in New York City with former Virginia Governor Tim Kaine who is now Chairman of the DNC. We discussed downtown Richmond improvements and specifically The National. He said he is looking forward to being in the audience for the Elvis Costello concert on Saturday, April 24th.

He, his wife and daughter were in Manhattan for the opening of the Richmond Ballet at the Joyce Theatre last Tuesday.

Tomorrow, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday (April 23, 24, 26 and 27) will see four sell-outs in a row at The Nat.

A group called NATIONAL opens a two-night engagement tonight (Thursday April 22nd) and earlier today there were still some tickets left. But the house has gone clean for tomorrow night's concert. NATIONAL will launch an extended European tour immediately after its gig at Richmond's National Theatre and in preparation for it, they are hanging an extraordinary light show on the downtown theatre's stage.

ELVIS COSTELLO comes into the venue Saturday which has been sold out for some time.

Sunday is dark, but WIDESPREAD PANIC begins a 2-night gig Monday and both of its concerts are sold out.

But don't dispair. There are almost always cancellations and no-shows.console.gif

It is so rare that the local press reviews concerts at the National that I've decided to post two from last week.

Here's RTD coverage by Wesley Hester of the group known as The National performing Friday night in the hall of the same name in Richmond:

And here's another RTD review, this one by RTD staffer Will Jones, of the Elvis Costello concert Saturday night:

Local law officials staked out The National and surrounding area Monday and Tuesday nights and arrested 69 people on various charges. It seems Widespread Panic was more than Richmond officials knew how to handle.

It smacks of a similar situation when The Greatful Dead played The Coliseum about 2 decades ago.

Both performances of WP at The Nat were sold out.

I get the impression it was Virginia ABC officers and not local Richmond officers but I'm not certain. While I don't have the facts on what went down, it seems like it would be to the detriment of the National and other downtown establishments to get as heavy-handed as this. Ahh ABC. Wonder if they'll be staking out the World Beer Festival too? <_<

The National Facebook announced about two hours ago that PUDDLE OF MUD scheduled for tonight at The Nat has been cancelled.

According to a notice in today's RTD, the musical group also cancelled last Friday's performance in Iowa due to the illness of a band member.

The National announces tonight's show as "postponed."

Meanwhile, OF MONTREAL will be on stage tomorrow night, June 1st.

Here are a few concerts just announced for The National:

SMASHING PUMPKINS, Tuesday, July 13th at 8PM

DEVO, Friday, July 30th at 9PM.

JETHRO TULL's Ian Anderson, Sunday, November 14th at 7:30PM

I don't know about DEVO, but Pumpkins and Tull might be considered "nostalgia" attractions.:shades:

Also announced at The Nat:

DEVANDRA BANHART, just coming off of an extended European tour. Tuesday, August 17th at 8PM.

Recently announced acts for The Nat:

INTERPOL, Thursday, July 29th

COHEED & CAMBRIA, Monday, August 30th

DEAFTONES, Tuesday, August 31st

National trivia notes:

The Nat's facebook has added more than 4,000 fans in the last two months and the list tops out at more than 14,000..

I've noticed that most (but not all) shows on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays feature the less expensive acts -- $10 to $18.. The bigger ones -- $20 to $50 -- are often booked on week nights and frequently sell out.

Those who dine at GIBSON's GRILL are escorted as a group into the theatre prior to those waiting on the sidewalk.

I don't know much about facebooks but enjoy clicking on the one for the National at the upper right of their web site.

STOCKHOLM SYNDROME will be dropping by the Nat Friday, September 10th at 8PM and will be bringing along David Schools of Widespread Panic.

Tickets go on sale July 16th -- and they are relatively inexpensive -- $16 in advance, $19 day of show.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remember a few months ago The National was pleading to bring its face book fan base up to the 10,000 mark? There are now slightly more than 15,000 fans. :)

Next week will be heavy on folk music at The National. Tuesday (7/20), British singer Joan Armatrading will perform, and the following night, Wednesday (7/21) the Indigo Girls will take over the stage.

If you plan to attend both acts, you can get a $10 discount by purchasing them together at the National Box Office at 7th and East Broad Streets.

Click "Schedule" on the Nat's website and scroll to Armatrading's appearance and ticket pricing. It's a bit confusing to me. Or call the Nat's box office, 804/612-1900.

From Melissa Ruggierri's column in today's RTD:

http://www2.timesdispatch.com/entertainment/flair/2010/jul/15/w-folk15-ar-291774/

If I'm not mistaken, The Indigo Girls' last Richmond appearance a year or so ago was at the 1,300-seat Byrd Theatre in Carytown.

Joan Armatrading was one of (if not THE) first attractions at The Empire Theatre on West Broad Street after its renovation in the 1970's. Or was it the late '60's? Anyway, I was there and it was a delightful evening.

PS: For those not in the know, The Empire is still in operation under the Theatre 4 banner and presents several annual childrens' shows as well as two or three adult plays and musicals. SOUND OF MUSIC just closed an eight-week nearly sold-out run in the old playhouse and nearby restaurants in The Gallery District were pleased with their increased business.

The Empire has over 500 seats and two balconies, but capacity is restricted to about 399 seats, all of them on the orchestra level, because of the type of contract Theatre 4 has with Actors Equity Association.

Takes on The Nat:

THE DEAFTONES will appear on the National stage Wednesday, September 1st -- not on Tuesday, August 31st as announced in an earlier Nat e-mail.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Someone said on the Nat face book that last night's INTERPOL (Thursday, July 29th) concert did not begin until 11PM or later. I hope there were a couple of opening acts to entertain the crowd while they waited for the main event. Doors opened at 7PM and the show (including openers) was supposed to begin at eight o'clock.

Check the website and facebook for verification:

METRIC will be playing the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville on October 27th.

I had heard a rumor that METRIC would play the National eventhough almost all of its tour dates are in arenas.

Well, they have been announced for a gig at The Nat on Monday October 25th between engagements in huge basketball arenas on Sunday 10/24 in Newark NJ and Tuesday 10/26 in Raleigh.

They will appear at The John Paul Jones arena in Charlottesville on Wednesday, 10/27.
