It's just unbelievable to me that there is not a single review of THE FLAMING LIPS spectacle Sunday night at the National in any of the local media I have been able to find.

There is an incredible video on The Nat's facebook page which shows the group being magically introduced at the top of a staircase while an elaborate light show is played on a cyclorama.

Then, to top it off, one of the band members encloses himself in a transparent "baloon" and literally floats as high as the balcony over the heads of the audience before drifting back down to the stage...helped along by outstretched arms of audience members.

Undoubtedly, the most elaborate show ever on the Nat's stage.

Somehow or another, the video, which can be accessed only by facebook members, worked for me one time, then re-locked itself.

If you can access the Nat's facebook page, do so by all means.

Sometimes this video "let's you in" but most often it doesn't.

The AltDaily in Norfolk thanks The Norva for bringing The Flaming Lips to that theatre and not to The National.

But they are mistaken. THE FLAMING LIPS played The Nat in mid May and the show was completely sold-out 3 months in advance

I think this is the best picture I've seen of the Nat's interior.

The National, at 7th and East Broad Streets in downtown Richmond was built in 1923 and in its history has hosted legitimate stage plays, movies, burlesque and vaudeville.

It is about to enter its 4th year as a high ranking music hall.

Next time you're in the neighborhood (during daylight) check out the friezes of naked figures frollicking along just under the roof-line on the building's facade. :)

New York actor, David Strathairn who is in town doing a role in the Steven Spielberg movie about Lincoln, showed up at the National last Saturday to see and hear the L. A. group FITZ AND THE TANTRUMS.

Pity Justin Timberlake didn't stop by. He was 2 blocks away at The Richmond Convention Center attending The Marine Corps ball with a blind date -- an event that got a lot of press and TV exposure across the country.

CARBON LEAF tonight at 8PM on stage at The Nat.

And then, tomorrow (Saturday 11/26/11) at 3:30 PM (doors 2:30) the University of Virginia/Virginia Tech game will be televised on "the largest screen and biggest sound system in the state of Virginia."

I guess it's free because it says "no cover" and invites all to stick around and party afterward.

You might need to pull some inside strings to get into the MAC MILLER concert on Tuesday night (11/29) at Richmond's National.

But, as of yesterday, the Norva still had tickets available for Wednesday (11/30) -- if you don't mind the drive to Norfolk.

Verify:

http://www.thenationalva.com (click NORVA at bottom of home page.)

UPDATE (Sunday 11/28): Tickets no longer available at The Norva for MAC MILLER on Wednesday 11/30.

Sometime in April, concert-goers to the National and audiences at Richmond CenterStage will have a new and elegant dining and drinking option nearby. The ground floor of the famous old Berry Burk clothing store is being renovated and promises to be a white-linen, full service restaurant welcoming pre and post theatre crowds for fine cuisine and cocktails.

525 AT THE BERRY BURK is diagonally across from The Carpenter Theatre at 6th and Grace Streets -- a two-block walk from The National.

An update on JANE'S ADDICTION. It appears you won't have to wait 'til Saturday to get tickets if you don't mind paying a premium price.

This show is sure to sell out quickly -- if it hasn't already (click Richmond on the JA webpage highlighted in the Ric dot com story and maybe you'll be as confused as I am.)

From an updated story in today's Richmond dot com:

Re: JANE'S ADDICTION:

I just called the Nat box office (804/612-1900) and was assured tickets WILL still go on sale Saturday 1/14. The "sold out" notices on JA/s webpage pertain to its own promotion of a limited number of autographed lithograph Tshirts and the limited number of tickets they have been holding.
