Here's a big article on Meadwestvaco's plans that I must have overlooked:

Meadwestvaco HQ could become windfall for the City - Deal represents $100 million investment

Some key excerpts:

MeadWestvaco Corp.'s decision to locate its corporate headquarters in downtown Richmond could give the city an investment of up to $100 million.

"It solidifies the city's position of being the corporate and financial hub of the Richmond region," said William E. Harrell, the city's chief administrative officer....

Officials said Wednesday that the company would locate its permanent headquarters in an office to be built between Fifth and Seventh streets next to the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond....

Harrell said city officials courted MeadWestvaco for more than a year and that the company considered several sites, including the James Center and a site at East Broad and Sixth streets, where a downtown performing-arts center has been envisioned.....

In December, NewMarket sold 2.3 acres at the site to the Federal Reserve for a future parking deck. Of the remaining 7 acres, the MeadWestvaco office will take about half.

NewMarket wants to develop the area as Foundry Park, which could include residential properties, a hotel and specialty stores.

How did we miss that one, Coupe? I don't recall seeing that in the TD on line.

It would not surprise me if other out of town major headquarters began standing up and taking notice of Richmond's benefits.

How do you suppose construction will impact next Fall's National Folk Festival?

Richmond adds to MWV incentive deal

The city will soon sign off on the incentives package that lured Meadwestvaco downtown:

To persuade the Fortune 500 packaging company to build a new headquarters next to the Federal Reserve building, the city is offering:

* a $2 million match of the $2 million grant from the state;

* a rebate of property taxes over 10 years, amounting to $350,000 a year for five years and $250,000 for the second five years; and

* a series of street improvements, including timed traffic lights, an easier left turn from Byrd Street to Ninth Street and adding a second lane to the Seventh Street/Byrd Street exit ramp off the Downtown Expressway.

As of now... we're looking at 10+ stories with up to 300,000sf of office space to house around 1000 employees.

here's the rendering:

This is an early idea though so it could change before work begins next year.

It's also only part of a larger project known as Foundry Park. Future phases will include a hotel, residential buildings and retail/entertainment.
