GSP International

I wonder if when "said city" has connections farther west how much farther are we talking west coast or just more mid-west than "said city" already has service. I guess my question is this: are we talking St. Louis, Kansas City farther, or Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles farther. Don't read into this too much I'm not talking about those cities specifically, more or less those cities or points in between.

From what I've understood, they initiate service between the said city, and JFK, and then start service between city and BOS. After that, you might start to see service further west. I can safely assume that MYR is also on the map for service also, speaking of which I have never seen so many commercials for one place in my life more than there. What I really like is that if JB comes to GSP, they will more than likely be flying the A320, which would be one of the, if not the largest plane in regular service at GSP. So just keep your fingers crossed when it comes to getting service, but like I said, we've got a good chance here.

Definitely largest passenger plane at GSP, but there are C5s in and out pretty regularly, presumably connected with the BMW Manufacturing plant.

The Air Force comes in to practice "touch and go's," and that's usually with the C-17, although I have seen C-130's doing that as well. When I worked at SCS, on the end of the runway, that building shook when the AF came in with the big planes. They also come in on the weekends to pick up reservists for the 315th AW in Charleston. Normally it comes from Charleston AFB, to GSP, then to Pope AFB in NC, then back to CHS. Likewise, you do have cargo jets that come into GSP for BMW, etc, but very rarely are they ever near the passenger terminal, which is the one thing that I never liked about GSP, because all the trees, it's very difficult to watch planes.

I have heard from a close source that American wants to start GSP-MIA service this year, with the Embraer, although GSP has been dragging their feet, which is why Northwest pulled the DC9 to mostly peak and holidays now. If there were anything I could do, I'd love to be a fly on the wall in one of the airport commission meetings. Oh the goodness that I could share with you guys then.

C-5s are the small ones, every once in a while an AN 124 comes in, it's even bigger than the c-5s, it's the largest mass produced plane in the world. I currently work in the same building that jarvisj3 used to, right under the landing path on the south side of GSP. NOTHING sounds like the AN125, it whines like nothing else, and it shakes the building when it lands on our side. The wingtip vortices even make the trees whip around, 300 feet below.

You can also get a good view just before the Verne Smith Parkway intersects with 101. You can pretty much see the whole airfield from there. I saw on a show the other day, can't remember the name, but they said the largest lift ever made was by an AN-125. The load was somewhere in the neighborhood of 135 tons. That load they broad in a while back, for BMW I believe it was, was just over 100 tons. So weren't far off from the world record. If it can handle an AN-125 fully loaded it can handle any aircraft in the world, except maybe the Space Shuttle landing because it needs about 15,000 feet, but I digress.

So the only problem we have getting big planes in here is just filling them up. If we could fill them up they would fly larger passenger planes in here, which I pray for in the future. That has to be my only gripe with GSP, is the regional jets. I'm not a short person 6'1" to be exact not very comfortable for me. I know other people have plenty of gripes about the airport but that has to be my only one.

GSP is one of the most convenient and nicest airports I have ever been too, but it is behind its time. When are they ever going to expand? They seem sooo slow at getting new airlines here and i'm not sure why seeing how Independence did so well here. Maybe they'll actually build a second runway like every other airport GSP's size has in 40 years. Everything in Greenville-Spartanburg is growing except for this airport. :whistling:

They won't build the second runway until the current one is over it's capacity.I think they said something like 70% capacity. Meaning having planes waiting in line to take off; then they will build it. They are a lot like the rest of this wonderful state, they'll plan ahead but won't impliment the plan till it's almost too late. At current the terminal is almost used at 100% capacity, although I've never used the B concourse, always the A. Funny it just always seems to happen that way. Back on subject. Once the airlines start coming in, I'd say one more, and it would be time to expand the terminal; and for Gods sake bridge the A & B concourses and put some restraunts up there theres more than enough room. We're on the verge I believe of that start of some expansion if we get anymore airlines in here. If we don't then you can forget about it for a while.

The article says they would announce their routes for the turbo-props in May, what about the regional jets that GSP requested. Is it all going to be one big announcement, or are they going to announce the regional jet routes seperatly? Good question I think I'll shoot an e-mail and hope for a response.

Have some not so great news from Frontier Airlines today.

Berry,

At this time we don’t have future plans for service to Greensville, but I’ll pass your suggestion on for consideration. Thanks for taking the time to let us know how we are doing.

Thank you for visiting FrontierAirlines.com

Although they misspelled Greenville you kinda get an idea of what they said. :(

Hmm, interesting response. It seems as though the misspelling tells you all you need to know. But on the other hand, if we were mentioned in the article, one would think they would at least be familiar enough with us to get a correct spelling. Not very good PR there. <_<

Off topic of Frontier, but I have a question for everone. How long do you think it will be before we get any international flights, and where will they likely be to? I remember about 5 years ago, there was supposd to be a regular flight to Toronto, but it was scratched before it ever happened. I think the airport website has soem flights to Europe, Carribean, and even S America in it's long range growth plans. What do you all think?

Around 2015 depending on how many low cost carriers GSP can get to keep the cost of flying out of there down.
