Nashville Bits and Pieces

Every time I have been on one we started somewhere, stopped at multiply places drinking along the way between the stops. Then ended at the bar where we were really starting the night. Just depends what kind of route you set up with them. 

Plus you have much cheaper booze, you control the music and you don't have randoms involved at all. It's a nice semi-private setting. 

 

I would strongly advise everyone to try one, I've been on multiply party buses a couple old school buses and a double decker one and it's been so damn fun. The pedal taverns are ok if you do it earlier when it's done disgustingly hot outside. The one that I've always wanted to do is the party barge but it's large, like 40-50 people and still pretty pricey with that many folks. 

Addition, we did one awhile back for a Christmas party and drove it around to all the neighborhoods with the big light displaces and then ended up downtown, now that was a hell of a party.

Then in the summer maybe a hot yoga trailer that only runs during the daytime.

I’m not absolutely against the concept as long as it is in the right place. However, I do wish they would be somewhat tasteful. The tractor really plays into the country-bumpkin stereotypes of Nashville’s past. 

I also understand that it is legal to operate most vehicles on public roads out of a necessity, so I don’t think this is a lobbying effort on the part of this industry. The same state law that allows a tractor to operate on the road between cornfields in Obion County is the same state law that allows them on downtown streets in nashville or Memphis.  I do, however, wonder how they get away with their passengers not wearing seatbelts and being in an open-air trailer. I don’t believe I could legally attach a trailer or camper to the back of my SUV and drive people around on it, so I would think that might be a possible strategy for enforcement.

My feelings is that they are wasting money because transplanting trees this time of year is not good, especially Yoshino Cherries, which is what these are do not transplant well this time of year and they are larger trees. They have enough trouble with heat stress in August  without having to deal with it in the Spring and Summer. They most all drop their leaves in August and look like crap.

They will have to prepare the holes carefully and they way those trees are planted in with the concrete around them, I dont think they can get enough   of the root ball. Those tress are most likely going to die and the are spending a lot of extra dollars for nothing. They will have to put tons of water on these trees everyday even if the survive the transplant.

Stupidity on the mayors part trying to win an election because something stupid like this is an issue instead of youth violence in the city and we have 65000 people sign a petition and they dont get upset when a 12,13, 14 & 15 year old kill someone. 

People in the community have their priorities all out of whack.

I apologize for resurrecting this topic, but I have been out of town for a week and missed it.  I am trained in landscape architecture field secondary  to my profession as an architect.  Decades ago I designed for Waller in Brentwood, so I am quite familiar with botanical species and their appropriate plantings.  While Yoshino cherries are quite lovely, I have always considered their planting at the river terraces a very poor choice.  The present ones are now quite ragged and mismatched and near the end of their viability.  Transplanting any of them regardless of the season is a joke.  They would be much more appropriate as a planting in Centennial Park or at the new state museum.   All of the ones you see so famously in D.C. and Japan are not planted in widely paved plazas strung with lighting strings or right adjacent to lounging pedestrians, homeless or otherwise.  In the present setting, they look like crap.  They only look halfway good in a short blooming period where they can look spectacular.   Street trees in this location need to be bigger and higher branching.  God forbid some idiot would take this as advocating Bradford pears.   This should have species that are street climate suitable and will remain fairly matched in height and shape for a long time.  While native species are quite admirable, the plaza environment is anything but even close to an environment approaching native growing conditions.     The criteria for this plaza(and many other Nashville street locations) should be hardiness, abuse tolerance and stateliness.  I would suggest lime trees (tilia cordata), Elm Zelchova  (z. carpinfolia) or Beech (hagus  species)  These species grow quite well here.  You can see limes in the Cool Springs area at the traffic islands at Walgreens.  There are  a couple of mature zelcovas on West End at Ruth Chris (though they have not been maintained  well at their base grilles) .  There was a magnificent beech (regretably destroyed for Vandy dorm construction) at West End & 21st.  If there was a more generous planting area, I might suggest magnolias (many of which shamefully have been lost in Nashville in recent years), though they are messy leaf and seed pod litterers, or dawn redwood, which were once native (before the last Ice Ages) here.   At any rate, y'all can gripe about losing urban green space here and there all day....what I know is that compared with Nashville 50 years ago, we live in a freakin' forest.  Get over it.

From that list my choice would be tilia cordata (for the flowers/fragrance). 

One tree I'd like to see more of is Stewartia pseudocamellia, do you know where any of these are being used locally and how they're working out?

Wired has an interesting article on automation in the construction industry, which is lagging for a number of reasons.  We really need to do something about construction costs, overruns etc.  It seems to cost much more to build large projects here than in other countries (particularly subways/light rail).

According to the article, where robots come into their own in construction is in highly complex projects and ones that keep changing.  This suggests that we could retain some interesting features now being tossed out because of costs.  Frankly I'm surprised that 3D printing hasn't already made ornamentation extremely cheap, or maybe people are just taught anti-ornamentation dogma in architect schools.  A 3D printer ought to be able to toss out a Beaux Arts facade pretty effortlessly.

^^3D printing is such a commodity right now that the market prices that fairly high. Depending on where you are in country a lot of factors that are dictated by the free market make it expensive. Such as land auquisition, labor costs (more so if unions are mandated), materials (ala tariffs). Interfering with or working into the free market is tough. 

Also, I didn’t want to ping the Endeavor project, but there is a forum regarding capping the interstate coming later this month. NCDC is putting it on in partnership with Barge. Could be an interesting talk as many have discussed it here.

Ohhh, I misunderstood... I thought we were talking about some plant called 'hagus'... but Haggis?  Yes I'm very aware of haggis...and  I actually quite like it!  It admittedly looks a bit horrific coming out in that ballooned stomach, but it's think it's very delicious.  I suppose I have  a peculiar appetite as well.  haha

The plant is f.a.g.u.s but the website changes it to hagus. At least I think that’s what is happening.
