This photo really shows just how far the SOBRO area has come, am I wrong in assuming that the arena was the catalyst to spur all of this?

my memory is....arena---->Hilton (with nice park over garage)---->Schermerhorn. also, the conversion of Shelby street bridge to pedestrian helped people not e afraid to go a block off of broadway at night

I'd go so far as to say it was the construction of the South Central Bell (Batman) Tower in 1993 that kicked it all off. That enabled the cleaning-up of Lower Broad and the Arena construction and everything else that followed and spread to SoBro.

I think the arena was a bigger catalyst, because it altered the perception of 'don't go downtown after dark'.

Isn't there a tunnel that runs under Broadway between the old convention center and Bridgestone Arena?

 

Did they do the same thing between the MCC and the arena?

I have read that there is a tunnel from the convention center to the arena, however no one that I have ever asked has ever actually been in it.

no idea if there is one from the MCC.

I know there is a tunnel in the old convention center to the arena but have not heard of any going from the MCC to the arena. Not sure why they would not do it though.

I could see them doing it for the old center to give them more room, if needed.  Don't know if they'd need it in the MCC.

Talked to a buddy who did concrete work at the MCC, said there is a huge tunnel big enough to turn 18 wheelers around in for loading.

Would like to see it for myself though.

I have walked through it many times. Yes, when they built it, you could drive semi trailers through it. Back in the late 1990's they used it  a lot. I was at NAMM one year and walked through the tunnel many times going to different vendors at the show. The tunnel used to go under Commerce Street to the old Church Street Center Mall as well. You could walk from the Mall to Broadway in the tunnel.

There was a large tunnel under Demonbreun that existed long before the MCC (it was adjacent to the MTA landport when I used to take the magnet buses). 

 

I would assume the incorporated that into the design.

It's still there. It's accessed in the parking garage of the MCC, I think. The west side of it.

You're talking about an underground tunnel, right?  Not the road that goes through the MCC.

Yes it's a drive-able tunnel that I have seen delivery trucks enter plus there are signs that indicate the entrance is also for Bridgestone Arena.  While it appears that concert/arena events have no problem parking their semis on 4th, regular arena delivery appears to go through this tunnel.

Btw...I noticed that I posted this initial question in the MCC HOTEL thread.  I was thinking it was the MCC thread when I posted.  Sorry about that guys.

the arena delivery tunnel was on the east side of 6th, if you have access to the google earth desktop version where you can see past satellite images, look at it before the MCC was built and it is clear.  I will post a screen shot when I get home. I intended to last night and forgot.  I assume as everyone stated that it can still be accessed from the MCC but not for visitors. just deliveries.
