I'd heard before that they're 2nd in debt per capita in the state because of all the residential growth and the new schools/infrastructure required to accommodate that growth. Having low taxes and little corporate tax base seems like it would be pretty difficult to take on hundreds of millions in debt and repay it.

They do seem destined for a shake-up soon, don't they?

I'd be surprised if Charlotte got down to the top 5.  With SC so close why would they invest in such a large facility here?  Even the outlying counties have trouble competing with SC.

Someone else mentioned (maybe on here) that SC may not have the engineering workforce necessary to handle this facility. Seems to me Boeing would have no problems attracting top talent to a beautiful city like Charleston though.

According to the Observer, the county commissioners received a closed door briefing on the status of the Boeing plant. Hopefully the briefing means that Charlotte made it through to the second round.

Gov. McPope will be here tomorrow for an economic development announcement.....

McPope would attend the opening of an envelope. He showed up for one of these "economic development announcements" in our region and it was 39 new jobs making adult baby wipes.

In relation to Boeing and incentives.  CBJ just tallied the top ten state incentives NC has given and the LARGEST State Incentive in NC history  is Dell at $250m in 2005; The largest ever incentive package in the state (combo of State, County, City incentives) is Apple for $320m.

I really would not hold breath for Boeing when others are in the billion offerings.

In other news (cross post with Perception of Charlotte thread) Charlotte climbed in the Milken's Institute rankings of  Best peforming Cities from #35 to #27.

Per Andrew Dunn (at the observer) tweet:

EDIT: and now article http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2013/12/20/4558246/gov-mccrory-schedules-jobs-announcement.html#.UrRvaJxqE3B

Gov. McCrory's office says the economic development announcement will be at 10200 David Taylor Drive. That's Electrolux.
