Yeah they should rename it East and West Baxter.

But then, west Baxter would still be to the east of Tryon Street. usually streets to the east of Tryon are called East ____ and streets to the west of Tryon are called West ____. By messing up that system you're being just as confusing.

Just giving you a hard time But the truth is, there's usually never an easy solution to the problem of renaming streets, because you always end up stepping on somebody's toes.

if you use one of the aerial sites like http://virtualearth.msn.com , you can really see how easily bestbuy and target and all of those stores will fit into this site. they actually look fairly smal compared to the mall building there now.

Bestbuy could actually fit easily into a downtown block, the only problem is parking.

A big box could also easily fit in the block across kings that isn't part of pappas' site.

Have any details come out on the cost of rooftop parking like they are doing at the southend lowes? other than just the generic "double" that came out early?

It really is about double.....an intown surface space costs about $8,000 (mostly the cost of land), while a intown deck space costs about $15,000....I don't know about roof-top spaces but I would estimate them similar to a decked space.

you would seemingly have to deduct from the cost rooftop spaces the money they save on a regular roof, right?

I would assume they woud still have to roof it, because rooftop parking won't be 100% impermeable.....but I'm not sure if having the parking lot their require the roof to become more or less complicated.

Today's CBJ says they have started demolishing the Shoney's and the cinema.......I belive construction of the HD Expo and Target should begin by the end of the year.

The mall itself will be demolished starting in the spring, but the creek will stay capped until the mall is gone to prevent contaminated runoff from entering the creek.

check out this section from a 1961 map of charlotte (found on http://www.cmstory.org ). Pearl St was obviously one of those streets taken out by the public projects, like Belk Freeway in the area.

you can see there used to be so many old street names around there, like Hill St, Pearl St, Boundary Street, etc. Surely the city could have named the "Baxter" culdesac one of those names if they never plan to reattach the streets. Or call it Baxter Court or something.

Drove past yesterday; the wrecking ball is indeed leveling the old Charlottetown Cinemas. Good to see some movement on this.

thank goodness the wendy's is staying as a suburban-model store. i guess since all the land along sugar creek there that became midtown square, etc., was once part of the orphanage, i guess it is fitting that wendy's (one of the largest donors to adoption causes) would be there. they will do really good business once the intersection is change. I just wish they could have worked out a deal to be a ground floor retailer in the parking deck there. it could have had pedestrian access on indy, but still had a drive through inside the deck for cars.

yeah, it is nice to see progress like wrecking the old buildings, and getting news of imminent road construction. this project has been around for SO long, but we'll have to wait even longer for actual construction to begin on the retail buildings.

Well thanks. I think this is the first time that we have had photos posted of Midtown Square, aka Outlet Square, aka Charlottetown Mall. It really does need to be fixed up or pushed down.
