The same way old money has maintained towns and cities all over the nation. I never denied Tallahassee doesnt have any. I would say a majority of the smaller towns in the Southern states does. But saying Gainesville would be irrelevant without UF is, well, definitely not accurate.

Nor is that same statement true about Tally.

As I said before, both cities would be different w/out FSU or UF, but w/state government, Tally would still have more going for it in an economic sense IMHO. Old money may maintain a town/city, but I don't think it really helps a city growth and progress as much as they could. There's tons of old money in Quincy w/the Coca-Cola fortunes and I'd not say it's a vibrant place economically.....however things are starting look-up over in Gadsden and I'm very happy to see that!

I sometimes feel that the Southern cities that have shed their old guard and looked to the future have faired better than those still run by the old money and the old guard way of doing things. Some examples of cities that have done that are ATL, CLT, and MCO. I hope Tally would learn some lessons from these cities in that area.

But I do understand now what you were tryin' to say GG.

No problem. I was never meaning anything toward Tallahassee. I was strictly talking about Gainesville. But, I would say there is still a lot of old money controlling the Orlando area, see Winter Park. But I would definitely agree that they are moving forward with a lot of the new money in Windermere beginning to flex their muscle.

State govt is HORRIBLE by itself in creating a vibrant economic community.

When city officials compare Tally, the compare it to Austin, Raleigh, and Madison. Each has state govt with higher ed AND significant (key word) high tech.

Tally lacks high tech and will only get it by working with FSU....not against it. Period. By folks in tally will never learn this lesson. They always fall back on 'we have $25K a year state jobs....why do we need to work with FSU at brining in high tech'? The mentality is right out of the 1950s.

Also, to compare student numbers as even they are even is LAUGHABLE. Does a student at UF produce the same kind of money into an economy as TCC? Not even close. You can't compare the dollars that a research university produces with a community college. Even FAMU, which is a fine institution, is small potatoes by comparison. To treat them as they contributed the same is silly.

If you don't back the right horse, expect to continue to struggle.

All that discussion about State Gov. and TCC/FAMU above was only used in reference to the point that if both UF and FSU disappeared, what would happen to both Tally and G'ville. That's all, nothing more was being said. It would be nice if more attention was paid to the entire discussion before the standard flame throwing commences.

^ Wow I must live in "Bizarro-World" Tally. None of the folks on my block are State Workers, all appear to be ambitious, most own their own businesses, most have relocated here from major metros and all I would suspect earn salaries way way above the state and national averages.

Agree 100%. People here aren't aggressive and are happy with getting paid peanuts. I am not a materialistic person, but I will never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever understand how people settle for the menial jobs offered in this town especially those of the government nature. Does anyone in this town have any ambition?

I don't know of anyone that has worked for the state or city more than 10 years making as little as $25,000.00 yearly. That's starting pay, and while its not great, its better than nothing. Surely we need to diversify the local economy and bring in companies that pay more, every city in this enormous country is trying to do the same thing. The question is how are we going to make ourselves stand out from the crowd.

Florida State University is a marvelous school which is why I go there, but like Tallahassee is among cities, FSU doesn't stand out nationally among universities. Why should I believe it is responsible for generating the bulk of the juices for our local economy. I think factors are in place that allow Tallahassee to grow outside of FSU's influence. While FSU may still be creating a few jobs, I believe most of the new jobs we're seeing and will see for the coming years will be created because Tallahassee is now a city of substantial size and because it is a state capital.

Wow how did Tally Rds thread morph into this?? Did you guys see where the City has pulled back on its proposal for Call St. until a later date?

The money these days in State Government is in the privatized jobs. There is great money there, I know, we put people there.

Still there are more jobs to be made IMHO w/COT and FSU linking up and working TOGETHER. FSU has to raise the bar on academics (which they have started a campaign to do so) and COT has to work better w/FSU and FSU needs to work better w/COT. There needs to be a clear vision and plan and that plan needs to be followed. Again we suffer from too many Chiefs and not enough Indians in this situation. While TK has good vision and helps FSU via his legislature connections, he's not always the easiest guy to work with.

Now's the time for FSU to strike IMHO b/c the Gov. and the Lt. Gov. (what's his name again...all I remember is his porn star stache) both are FSU grads. This connection could really help if the cards are played correctly. Also while Charlie's home is TPA Bay, he's been in Tally a long time and definitely seems more of a friend to us than the guy who is MOVING OUT THIS WEEK! When I saw that on the news, I wanted to run over and help them pack up. :D

And YES several opportunites have been missed. We all know what those are. If we are going to continue talking about this subject, let's do it in a constructive manner and talk about what can be done to improve the situation, not dwell on what's been done wrong, point fingers and make blanket stereotypical statements about the city and its residents that aren't always true. That stuff really gets us nowhere and divides us thus hurting us as much as the missed opportunities :)

Nothing wrong w/disagreeing w/each other and nothing too wrong w/cheap shots (hey it is the internet) but you guys were starting to take cheap shots at each other and that's when it's not enjoyable to me. But hey maybe others like that sort of thing. That's all I was tryin' to accomplish, just calm you guys down, not end the discussion. Also a lot of that last paragraph wasn't entirely aimed at you. It was aimed at all of us including me.

Help me here, if memory serves me right did TJ's Call Street comment start this? Or has it been going on before that? You are absolutely right, TJ could have talked about Call St. w/out a dig at FSU. I should have referenced that to be fair. My apologies if I made it seem one-sided.

Poonther,

TJ starts this with a cheap shot at FSU and you try this post? Laughable. Talking about dividing. You want to take cheap shots and then try and take the high moral ground? TJ also? Total BS.

Tally will always be nothing more than a govt town because folks can't see Tally working against FSU will never bring high tech to this area. Even with them working together it might not happen, but definitely not against FSU. TJ's statements above show he doesn't understand research or high tech.

But the 'let's work together' schtick is hilarious as you only adrress 'blanket' statements towards tally and not FSU......especially not noting FSU was attacked first by TJ.

The 'we hate FSU board' is back.

stjoe,

You're not getting an apology out of me. Never once did a say a single negative thing about stjoe. I didn't even mention you. Truth is, I have the right to free speech just as you do. And the 'we hate FSU board' never left if that's what you want to call me. Truth is, you, yourself never take the time to post anything unless its bitter and negative. Other members here have constructive ideas and offer a solution to problems. You only take time to point out what is wrong.

This proposed re-routing of Call Street was coming forward as a result of the completion of the FSU parking garage. I felt it wasn't necessary for us to change the entire street east of Macomb just to make it easier for people to park at FSU's new call street Garage, which would require changes between Macomb and Copeland. I believe there were other members here who felt the same as I did, others who didn't. Yes I did voice an opinion against the "rulers" at FSU, but I have my own personal reasons for doing so and I need not justify them to you, just as you've never justified your dislike for the government here in Tallahassee. You complain about this being a 'group think' but you only seem to go up in flames when someone expresses an opinion you don't agree with.

Lighten up.

Maybe if we set up a separate thread for flames then all the *edited for PCness!* in the more constructive threads will stop.

We all have our opinions about FSU, COT, other posters. Heck if we all had the same opinion, this place will turn into everyone patting themselves on the back all the time.

Sort of back on topic:

I noticed that COT/LC is pretty bad about picking up road kill. I walk along Levy Road to work everyday and there is a skeleton of a possum and a fresher one that has gotten to the "bloated up" point. I might have a minor in Biology but I think I have learned WAY too much about decompossion from our roadways.

Is there a "Roadkill hotline" I can call to get them to clean it up?
