If the nine story buildings proposed for the Beaman lot look like that ^ I won't be quite as disappointed... but something tells me that ain't gonna be the case.

I'm guessing the city needs to be in the desert to take advantage of the effects of the climate on energy-efficient building design, which is why also looking in Appalachia (which is pretty close to the opposite of a desert climate) doesn't make a lot of sense.

To me Appalachia would make more sense due to the more abundant natural resources. We look at countries that have built in deserts (ie the UAE) and their biggest problem is water. What is the biggest natural resource concern in a desert? Water! A closer to home example, is Las Vegas. The only reason Las Vegas is as successful as it is is because the Hoover Dam was built and we have had to artificially irrigate the desert. I would be shocked if Appalachia would have 150,000 continuous acres available, but I would envision a cataclysmic failure if this were to go in a desert.

Ticket sales launched yesterday for Summit One Vanderbilt, the newest observatory in Manhattan located in the crown of One Vanderbilt in Midtown East.
