405 Broadway is using "Upbrella technology" that reduces the impact on the traffic-heavy streets around it. Workers use a monorail lift system to haul supplies and equipment to the roof of the five-story bar, restaurant and entertainment complex. 

DPR Construction uses a unique scaffolding system to build in the cramped, heavily trafficked environment. The system, designed in 2016 by Canadian firm Upbrella, relies on a mobile roof used as the base for the monorail system that keeps equipment off the ground level.

It's the first time the Upbrella system has been used in America, said company owner Joey Larouche.

"There's not enough room here to build (with traditional systems). The lot is only 35 feet wide," says Nick Garzini, DPR Construction Special Services Group Leader. "It still has a stacked-stone foundation from the late 1800s."

Thanks for posting. Helps explain a lot of things I've wondered about this building.

Seeing pics of this project previously, I thought it looked massive and out of scale. Now I understand the whole top (that looks like a floor) and that overhand girder will not be a part of the building.

The Texas company that developed the North Gulch site home to a mixed-use tower anchored by Whole Foods has paid $31 million for a property located catty-corner from that Broadway high-rise.

Looks like they are getting ready to hang a light on 8th near the Paseo development. There’s not a cross-street right there, so I wonder if it will just be a flasher. It’s a much-needed spot for a cross-walk.

This is going to be a HAWK pedestrian signal. It was part of the development's OHM package.

Good! They have these all over the busy roads in Tampa. Definitely helps with pedestrian safety. 

Here's an example of a crossing in Tampa. 6 lane busy road. 

Once pedestrian presses button and gets OK to go, traffic stops on both sides of the road.

I believe that's the building that Merchant's was in till just recently. I recall eating a few meals there 20 years or so ago, and it was one of the first restored buildings on Broadway.

One can not expect to have such a low profit margin land use in the central core indefinitely when competition opportunities in suburban locations are so numerous.   When land values greatly exceed the possibility of profits for a business use, it is very difficult not to consider relocation or closure.  That, besides urban gas stations, is the crux of small businesses that many consider "historic" but are not yielding adequate profits to sustain them.    My attitude towards a great many complaints of "losing our history" is that often the subject of much "ashes and sackcloth" wailing about them is that they are not economically or culturally sufficient for such anquish about losing them to put money where their mouth is to preserve them.   Around here, I find that complaints of the loss of "Old Nashville" is particularly hypocritical IMO.  If one does not have enough sense to have adequate gas in your tanks before venturing into the core, that is your own lookout.  Likewise, the expectaion of low cost  stores like grocers can not be expected to offer the scope of suburban "superstores" for urban dwellers;  their gross profit margins are too low to provide other than a more limited niche more like the Turnip Truck niche.  Likewise other big box type retailers, i.e. IKEA IMO.

Purely a guess, but it could be for the electrical transformer. They can get big and often are buried under the sidewalks in front of buildings with access from the building (basement) or sidewalk.
