This is leasing plan.  This Level 1 space is located between the main entrance and the Gantt Museum.  The Level B1 space is fronting church between the two parking ingress/egress passages, so basically right in the middle of the Church St facade.

We don't give JW Marriott enough credit for being a disappointingly bland building. Their portfolio would have suggested a sharper looking project.

Completely disagree. It's a solid looking Hotel, with very high build quality, a nice lobby, rooftop pool and very nice rooms, with good street presence. We don't need every building to make a statement. It's a top 3 hotel in this city.

We’re all entitled to our opinions but I’m with Toz on this one.  When you try to associate your brand with glamour and excitement and a 5-star experience, shouldn’t your aesthetic be just as important as your bathroom soap brands and sheet thread count?  That’s like saying Rolls Royce doesn’t need all the flash and should stick to building reliable but above-board comfortable transportation.  I realize those are my words and not yours, but I truly believe that should absolutely be the case.  This structure is as exciting outside as the old 1970s Marriott on Trade St.  Look at the JWs in our peer group, Austin (red stone and glass) and Nashville (swoop).  How’d we get this thing?   And I’m not talking size either - I realize these are tourist cities.  But in the end, it’s what feels like a hand-me-down cost cutter design for Charlotte or a 3/4 version of what everyone else gets.  That irritates me and I won’t make excuses for it either.  Design better.

To be fair…that first photo bares a striking resemblance to this ours here. Just different materials and smaller scaled from what it looks. Wish the parking deck was more utilized on the top than it is. Perhaps with a roof top park amenity. The parking deck seems to be robustly built so I would assume it could reasonably hold a roof top park/green-roof. Not certain though! But also I agree Charlotte does get some short end of the stick buildings.

I do admit that our JW Marriott isn't a stunner. The building is more of a companion piece to Ally Center.  Outside of us and probably other urban/architecture enthusiasts, I don't think the average person who stays in this hotel will care what the outside looks like, it's all about what's on the inside.

This is what we get around here. Plain, boring cookie-cutter blah. I don't expect anything special from new projects. I just hope to be surprised now.

I agree. This is one of the best hotels in all of Charlotte. This looks better to me than any other one Uptown by a landslide.

Seems like the 3D didn’t exactly pan out right so I had to go into street view to make sure I wasn’t dreaming up how it actually looks lol. Thought it was funny since I had to do a double-take.





I see it and it’s a nice hotel. Especially at the ground level. It seems this project has most of its best qualities on the pedestrian scale and somehow we still find ways to complain about the buildings on top. It’s not extravagant for sure but I would see how it’s necessarily bad. It’s a decent hotel, credit where credit is due. (Not saying you’re wrong. “Good-looking” is relative and subjective, just trying to point out a different perspective).

2 hotels I like in uptown one new and one older:  Kimpton Hotel is pretty nice looking with curving facade 

I like the Omni (formerly the Radisson) for its trapezoidal all glass facade.

the JW Marriott is great inside and street level.
